SACP message of condolences on the death of Comrade Dikeledi Magadzi
Monday, 29 December 2025: - The South African Communist Party (SACP) conveys its message of heartfelt condolences to the family of Comrade Dikeledi Magadzi who breathed her last on Sunday morning.
We also send our condolences to the African National Congress and the Alliance, as well as the communities she hails from and the rest of the society.
Comrade Dikeledi Magadzi became the first Limpopo MEC of the Department of Public Works in 1994 as a necessary consequence of the discussions and meaningful revolutionary consultations within the movement and the Alliance, regard having been had to recognise gender and Alliance imperatives within Comrade Premier Ngoako Ramatlhodi's first Provincial Executive Council.
Prior to her appointment as MEC, Comrade Magadzi was part of activists who actively organised workers towards the establishment of the Democratic Nursing Organisation of South Africa at Elim hospital and in the former Venda Bantustan – the union which successfully ended up launching nationally in December 1996 when Comrade Magadzi was already an MEC in Limpopo.
She was a member of the National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union from 1987 to 1994. From 1992 to 1993, she participated in the unification or amalgamation of the union’s membership from the Bantustans Staff Associations, namely Gazpsu, Vhepsu, Notrapsu, and Kwapsu, playing a vital role in shaping Nehawu in the Limpopo province.
Besides her activities in the workers and union activities, she was part of comrades who got recruited for a variety of activities by the late MK Comrade Ray Malele, among others, for underground activities towards the dislodging of the apartheid system, which led to our 1994 democratic breakthrough. As the SACP, we salute Comrade Magadzi for her bravery and dedication in this regard.
During the period of her deployment as an MEC, her constituency office was in Alldays, Bochum (Limpopo) which she used as a platform for engagement with communities, traditional authorities, religious institutions, Alliance structures, mines such as Venetia and many other structures of civil society. In her honour, and in recognition of the contributions she made to the SACP and the working class, we will continue to strive for a strong popular left front and a powerful movement of the workers and poor.
Forever appreciating her working-class background, Comrade Magadzi always took the unions and the Alliance on board throughout all her deployments, including in Public Works, Safety and Security, Agriculture, Health, Transport and Water Affairs, amongst others. Consultation with Alliance Structures was the hallmark of her ever-enduring dedication to the cause.
Her entire political life was an exemplary illustration of sacrifice and selflessness, always accepting her weaknesses and limitations wherever such existed, whilst leveraging on her strong personal attributes.
In paying tribute to Comrade Magadzi, the SACP calls for the strengthening of unions across the country and the organising of the unorganised. The SACP will continue playing its vanguard role to ensure unity among unions towards building a disciplined movement of the left.
