Citing abuse of immigration powers, DAP vice chairperson Teresa Kok said that the ban imposed on her from entering Sabah was a political tool to "suppress and oppress".
She argued that although Sabah has the power to ban individuals from entering the state, it should not be used without valid grounds.
“As I was already banned from entry into Sarawak since last year, yesterday’s ban by Sabah government means that I cannot now travel to the two eastern states which are parts of my own country,” she said in a statement today.
Kok, who is also MP for Seputeh, said that the ban was initially to protect Sabah and Sarawak from an influx of economic migrant workers, as stated under the Malaysia Agreement.
She asserted that out she is neither an economic threat nor security threat to the two states.
She pointed out that the record however shows that the ban has been imposed mostly on the oppositionists and civil society activists.
“It is thus clear that the two BN controlled governments have used the immigration power as a political tool to suppress and oppress the opposition,” she said.
Kok was
banned from entering Sabah yesterday afternoon after she landed in Sandakan to witness the installation of the Sandakan DAP Wanita wing that night.
No reason given She was told by an Immigration Department officer that the state's government had issued the instruction to bar her entry.

“Till today, I was never told why I was banned from Sarawak. When I was denied entry into Sabah upon arrival at Sandakan airport from KLIA2 yesterday, I was also not told the reason why I was banned,” she stressed.
Kok then issued a challenge to both the Sabah and Sarawak chief ministers, Musa Aman and Adenan Satem (
left) respectively, to have a fair fight at the voting polls instead of resorting to “unethical” tactics.
“If they have any sense of fair play, they will not resort to abusing immigration powers to fight the opposition, irrespective whether their political support if threatened or otherwise,” she said.
She added that Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak should not be silent in light of such abuses of power by the BN controlled state governments.
