Subject: Banks Sails Win Again
Santana 20 #920 Fayest, is off to an early start winning the windycrest sailing clubs spring open in mid May and the Grand Cup the following week end. The first was two days of super light air where we took a 2-2 and 1-1-1 for a win using our membrane Genoa. Vernon Green had two bullets the first day but had spinnaker problems and fell to 4th over all. IV McNamara finished second and John Barnett third. The Grand Cup was a blow out ,one race on Saturday with winds up to 28 and gusts to 38. It was shake and bake. Using our Banks full batten jib and main, poling out the jib and keeping the spinnaker in the bag we were able to take a 1 on Saturday and two 1's on Sunday and were able to get the spinnaker up on the final leg to beat a Merit 25 scratch. Starting with J29's CC28 Lazer 28 and a Jay 30 and three santana 20's proved very interesting. Showing up at the weather mark among those elephants was even more interesting. In more than one instance I looked up to see the main inverted and my back stay adjuster pulled to the max, sailing only on our full batten jib, but we were going forward not sideways or on our side as many of the big boats did in the tremendous gust up to 40 mph.But for the first time in the 50 year history the Grand Cup, it belongs to a Santana 20..IV McNamara finished close behind in another S20. Third place was a C&C28 and Fourth was a Santana 20.Not a bad showing for a so called light air boat.
