Hi Malecon Matinee Amigos and Ruederos
LAST FRIDAY
First apologies because I did not make it clear enough that Rueda Club last Friday was off because Salsa Friday at the Merlin was off (another booking took precendence at the venue). I was also off on holiday when I might have thought through better letting everyone know. I was presuming that the cancellation of Salsa Friday was widely enough known about for everyone to know RC was off too.
YAMIL & KATH WORKSHOP, Sun 10th May, Merlin, Edinburgh
Before Salsa Sunday
LILY & YAMIL: Son Workshop, Sat 23rd May, 1-2.30pm, Beach Lane Social Club, Portobello, £9
Lily continues her great classes, Son never failing to be worth it. Yamil joins her this time, newly arrived to stay in Edinburgh. We'll split the class as usual to look after beginners as well.
MALECON MATINEE, Sat 23rd May, 2.30-5.30pm, Beach Lane Social Club, Portobello, £5 incl drinks
Timing "always" now MM at 2.30-5.30pm (whether Sat or Sunday) with a 90min class from 1pm
Monthly Malecon Matinee celebrates the lovely contra tiempo Son and Salsa that's not played much in Salsa clubs here. "Malecon" comes from the famous Havana sea front; and Salsa Celtica's song was about ours, El Portobello Malecon. "Matinee" because there's music and dance all day in Cuba. Variety will include Los Van Van, Rueda, and regular Salsa. Cuban Ceilidh and 2 minute Merengue and Bachata classes to get everyone dancing!
Beach Lane Social Club is behind Portobello Police Station. Park on or off the High Street. Lots of buses. £5 entry includes drinks. All proceeds saved for future MMs. For maps, click below to go to:
Keith has given us some new posters and fliers for MM! Thanks Keith.
NEXT RUEDA CLUB, Fri 29th May, 7.30-9pm, Merlin, Edinburgh
MALECON MATINEE, Sun 21st June, 2.30-5.30pm, Class at 1pm
SONORA LA CALLE + CUBAN WORKSHOPS, Sat 1st Aug, The Picture House, Edinburgh
Kath writes: "I am organising a big Cuban salsa night at the Picture House on Lothian Road on Sat 01 Aug, and am bringing Sonora la Calle over from Cuba a week early to do so. I am sure you know that band - they will be playing again for Havana Rumba during the Fringe and have just been touring Europe for 3 months. I know the whole band from Santiago de Cuba and they are fabulous live performers, much much better than when they are simply playing for a dance based show. This year is also Caledonia's 10th year of running dance/music trips in Cuba so is also a bit of an anniversary. And, of course, it is the 50th anniversary of the Cuban Revolution. There'll be a series of 4-5 cuban dance classes running on the afternoon of 1 August, also in the Picture House, bringing a number of Cuban teachers together.
