A tent alone is less expensive which would allow us to get to more families. It needs to be strong enough to provide shelter for a reasonable period of time.BarryBarry Rassin, FACHE

I am told there are not that many in the world but what is there Rotary will find. We are aware that shelter is the urgent need and are also looking at longer lasting shelter as if a hurricane hits the tents will be gone. Thanks for what you are doing and please keep Rotary in the loop as rehab facilities and the Jaipur limbs are part of our efforts also.BarryBarry Rassin, FACHE

Subject: Haiti update from Al Ingersoll Feb 16, 2010
Dear Mr. Billock and Rotary Colleagues,
I would like to provide a short update on the Haiti Prosthetics and Orthotics situation and then make a plea. I am now back in Minneapolis and trying to help coordinate Healing Hands for Haiti ’s continued recovery.
Handicap International and Healing Hands for Haiti International Foundation are partnering together to open a temporary physical medicine and rehabilitation facility near the Port au Prince airport. A prosthetist / orthotist from South Africa is currently in country and coordinating set up and staffing needs. I hope we will be operational this week!!!! 600 prefabricated, temporary prosthesis are being shipped in to help with the first wave of people with amputations and will allow some time to help fully assess the true number of injured.
My plea is for Rotary to try and increase the Shelter Box project scale. I have received two different emails from Physical Therapists who have and continue to work in Haiti . One says: A lot of patients have been discharged and they started to come to our rehab program ,most of them do not have houses .We all know this .
I was happy to know how much we can help to these patients. A lot organizations and people are thinking how we can make prosthesis ,distribuit them , organize teams ,etc. But ,now the real NEED ,the most basic thing to SURVIVE ,special for handicap people is HOME!!! AT LEAST A CEILING WHERE TO PROTEC THEMSELF FROM RAIN. These people are very weak and they will become sick living in such a bad conditions . THEY DO NOT HAVE HOUSES , BEDS , CLOTHES ,FOOD . iN OUR MEETINGS ,WE ALL ARE EXCITED talking ABOUT COMPATIBLE TECHNOLOGY for prothesis and teams for therapy and everything is find and I agree ,but we have to think also about the basic needs and rights that every child and human being have.
Please , we have to be AWARE about realistic priorities for kids and people with disabilities and also how we can help their families with tents!!!
My field can bring in the best technology and people to make orthotics and prosthetics, but if the injured do not survive all will be for naught.
I have asked my father’s Rotary to take the donation they had earmarked for Healing Hands for Haiti and instead send it to the Shelter Box project. I personally saw hundreds of Shelter Box tents set up on very short notice and was very impressed.
Thank you,
Al
