Paul and I are looking into purchasing a camcorder this Christmas. I
was wondering if anyone has made a similar purchase themselves and
would recommend or not recommend the decision they made. Thanks for
your help!

Steve and I made a purchase last year with the arrival of the boys. We
bought a Sony HandyCam DCR-HC42 that we have been really happy with.
It is a MiniDV, which we chose because we wanted to edit the video
(which is why we didn't get a DVD) and the hard drive models were still
really expensive (I am not sure about now). Canon and Sony were very
comparable, and so we ended up going with Sony because we liked the
touchscreen controls and the Carl Zeiss lens. We went with the highest
up on the Sony line mainly because of a few extra features, including
an attachment shoe at the top that allows you to add accessories (like
a light) that don't need a separate battery and can be controlled
through the video's main control panel.
A couple of things to consider... I would buy a light for the camera,
probably no matter which one you choose. We use it whenever we film
inside, and it just makes the quality of the picture a lot better.
Also, you probably want to buy a bigger battery. We ended up buying a
generic of the largest Sony battery.
We purchased our camcorder online. The camcorder itself (as well as a
bag, tripod, and miniDVs) came from a site called B&H photo, and the
battery came from TriState Camera.
If you have any other questions, please let me know! Good luck!
Sara :)
