This is sad to hear as a lot of people enjoy this park and the ones who follow the rules pay to register their machines. Part of that money is supposed to go to the parks in this state. It seems like this park is closed more than its open. Once again something in council bluffs is put aside "neglected" and once again we have lost something for the youth to do. I have participated in work days and enjoy it and am ready to make this park enjoyable again!

A little bit of information as to why the park is closed from the DNR website:

At this time, the River Valley OHV Park in Council Bluffs is closed for riding or any use. A forestry plan to address the hazards posed by flood-damaged trees is being developed. Until the park can be safely used, it will remain closed. For updates or questions, please contact David Downing at 515-238-3564.

The park may be closed for a period to allow for a possible logging contract. Then the area will be reopened as soon as possible. We have dead cottonwood trees that are up to 100feet high that falling over the entire trail system. The only way to effectively and safely log the area is to close the park during the process. The club can then focus on trail work rather than falling trees. We will also get a steel fence installed along the levy to curtail illegal riding that jeopardizes the future use of the area. This is a rider safety issue.

I agree with Blazer. We live in Lincoln and ride there the last two years. The Club has worked hard to have this park, keep it up, etc. and this is out of their control.

We've done two workdays and do clean up during every trip. Many trees have degraded, so safety is an issue, but a year or more to do removal is excessive, likely due to State Govt managing it.  How about opening public 'logging' of the marked trees and have it done in a few months?  Sign a waiver to eliminate risk, have a DNR person oversee the process, etc. Very disappointed in the tree issue the last 12-15 months.

The other IA DNR parks are 4+ hours away, so we'll go to Genoa, Tuttle Creek and Milford Lake this year - nor permits or fees.  Also found one in Shawnee County KS, outskirts of Topeka, that operates like River Valley - club manages, good community relations, no permits or fees.

Here is another update. Once the logging contract has been cleared, the logging can be done rather quickly. Depending on the time of the year the contract would begin, and the weather, the logging should take only a couple of months.  We will know more as the bid process begins.
