Saturday, March 4 at 9 AM - 3 PM
At: River Valley OHV Park

From: Stan Gregory
* Jason and I met with the DNR today to workout out a schedule to get the park opened. There will be three voluntary work days coming up. The first workday will be March 4th starting at 9AM. If you plan to attend the work day there are a few things you need to know; DNR will be present enforcing current rules, must sign liability waiver, this is NOT a open ride day, you will not be allowed to use any gas powered tools but can use hand tools such as clippers and hand saws.
* The first work day will consist of patching and working on the fence. Fencing tools wills be provided by DNR. Once the fence is complete we will be move on to clearing hazards along the perimeter trail.
* At this time there is no set date for the park to open. Open date for the park is based on the completion of required work and weather permitting. Hope to see you all there.

Jay,

Thanks for the update. I heard there was a conversation on FB about whether a DNR permit would be required to use our atvs at the workdays. Resolving that will reduce lost time, frustration, etc. for those who wish to participate and don't ride at other IA parks or live nearby.

There's a LOT of conversation on FaceBook. :) Skimming FaceBook it appears that yes, you do need a Iowa DNR sticker to use your machines while volunteering for the work days.

I don't see any Iowa DNR official saying yes or no. David Downing is on this list, maybe he can tell us.

I continue to hope Rhonda Fowler will join this list. I'm under the impression she's in charge. :)

Thanks,

j

Forwarding to the list, since Rhonda hasn't joined this list (yet?).

Cheers,

j

Hi Jay. I'm coordinating efforts from the Wallace Building, but it would be best for anyone who wants to volunteer or has questions to contact DNR Park Ranger Aaron Johnson. He is assigned to River Valley OHV Park and is your best source of information. His number is 402-980-3929.

I'm happy to help out with any other things you may need.

The opening of the park will be determined by our staff assigned to the park, but be assured that we would like to get it open to riding as soon as possible after all major safety concerns have been addressed.

Thanks,
Rhonda

Relaying more work day info for people not on FaceBook:

Supplies volunteers should bring:
1. Post pounder - we have 6 already crew leaders only
2. Leather gloves
3. Wrench's/sockets for cable clamps - crew leaders only need 2 volunteer leaders for cable crew 1/2 wrench and 11/16ths wrench required or sockets
4. Loopers / hand saws
5. Shovel - if digging out tires/posts
6. ALL MACHINES MUST BE LEGAL / ATV LAWS WILL BE ENFORCED / HELMETS ARE REQUIRED
7. ALL VOLUNTEERS MUST CHECK IN WITH IADNR STAFF ON VOLUNTEER DAY
8. DRESS FOR THE WEATHER

Here is a look at the condition of the park's perimeter trail on 03MAR2017.

The DNR Officer asked a few riders to go for a scouting loop of the perimeter trail prior to the volunteer clean up day so he could assign work areas and get a "before" record of how the park sat before the club members stepped up and volunteered to assist the cleanup & get this place open.

I'm optimistic that the required perimeter trail clean up can be hammered out in a day or 2 if enough people show up.
Frankly, the fence is going to take some work but I'm sure we can get it reestablished if we get some help.

PS It wasn't a race but man, it was miserable eating exhaust from a big ol 4T race quad and then repeatedly eating sand roost from pipie 2T so I had to reposition myself in the line.
