This is a repost.  Excited about this idea!
 

What I was thinking of doing was altering the PRUSA printer to run on maker-slides (www.makerslide.com). They main problem with maker-slide aluminum rails is that you can get any!!I'm so tried of waiting months to get 3D printer parts. An idea I had was to build the rails using abs plastic rather than aluminum with some type of method to reinforce the structure. Do the maker-slides have to be made out of metal?


An idea!! Could the maker-slides be printed on our ZCORP printers? I know it is possible to strengthen the power based print with epoxy. I have some epoxy left over from another build.


Does anyone know where to find the design files for the Maker-slide? Since it was on kickstart.com they should have posted the files.

Ah, a very interesting idea. It's worth trying, but I have a feeling the linear bearing won't be smooth enough.

What's the max dimensions of objects in the ZCORP? I was thinking about it, and if you're talking about making the makerslide with the ZCORP then why not take the idea all the way and print all the structural parts for a prusa style printer on the ZCORP? It wouldn't even need to be makerslide based. The cost of the consumables would probably be relatively high compared to laser cut birch or threaded rods, but I bet it would work fine.

Also, even though it would end up being pretty heavy and ugly, you could use angle iron to build the structure of a printer, and provide rails for linear bearings. The bonus of that is that it's cheap and readily available. It's also extra strong so you could make a relatively huge printer without compromising rigidity. Granted the heated platform would probably become an issue as you get really big...

The extrusions seem to be something we could find from an al extrusion supplier. If we can get the extrusions from a supplier that would work, I think we could fabricate the rest. I would love to build a HUGE printer.
