Lay Down
I was thinking about topics for this newsletter when a friend suggested
ways to get your body through the winter---as the groundhog saw fit to
give us six more weeks of it this year, here goes-
What is winter for? Sunlight is short, we struggle to wake up and get
to work before the sun rises - activity in the natural world slows and
so do we - do we take advantage of the extra time to rest? Are our
lives in rhythm with the earth? This time of year is for rest and
renewal - so we may be ready to meet the activity of spring and summer
full on - with that in mind I offer this daily practice to help you
through the rest of the winter so you will be prepared for the activity
ahead:
One of the most challenging and also beneficial things to do is to just
lay down. Try it - lay down on your back, breathe - now notice, are
you truly laying down? Are you letting all your weight sink into and
be supported by your mat? Take a deep breath and notice your head - how
much of your head is touching the mat? Can you exhale and let the floor
take more of your weight?
Sometimes laying down can feel vulnerable - sometimes relaxing can feel
scary. Our backs, shoulders, legs and arms may resist this exercise.
Whether we are aware of it or not, most of us carry ourselves in an
armed state - ready to spring away from danger. Holding ourselves in
that state of readiness is fatiguing and in the long term can cause
severe health problems. If we don't take time for rest, eventually
our bodies will tell us emphatically that we need to rest with muscle
spasms or sickness.
So we lay down, notice how much work we are doing, and sometimes it can
seem overwhelming and frustrating - "Why can't I relax? - this
should be easy!" Just start with one part of your body, maybe a
shoulder and let it be heavy, sink into the floor, let the floor hold
you, support you. Soon you'll feel your chest or neck wanting to
follow, let that area sink. Little by little the rest of your body
will cascade into the floor. Don't think too much or judge yourself
- your tension didn't come on overnight and it will take a little
practice to let it go. Sometimes the thought arises, "Rest is for
down time - I have to do X so I don't have time to rest." You're
just going to have to trust me on this one, but based on over ten years
experience, you'll find that if you take 5-10 minutes per day to
consciously lay down, you'll experience more energy and feel more
awake and refreshed throughout the day.
