Bodycare tips for Travelers
As Americans, we need to squeeze the most benefit out of the precious
five days per year we grudgingly let ourselves have for vacation. Here
are some suggestions to reduce our stress while traveling:
Be prepared for delays: It's more than likely going to happen whether
traveling by plane, bus, train or car. Try to breathe through any
travel hassles and try not to become upset.
Drink water: Stress, heat, air travel, etc. suck moisture out of our
bodies. Staying hydrated keeps our cells happy and helps us handle
stress. Try to drink at least a liter of water a day. If traveling by
air, pack a moisturizer in your carry-on to keep your skin from drying
out too much.
Move around: Holding one position fatigues our muscles. Movement helps
flush waste from our tissues and will help prevent sore shoulders and
hips resulting from too much sitting. If you are driving, take a break
every 2 hours and walk and stretch a bit. If flying or taking the
train, try to get up and move around every 30-45 minutes.
Etc.: You may want to pack some tennis balls in your travel bag. If
your back or hips feel sore you can place them under your thighs, hips
or between the seat back and your shoulders to relieve the pressure of
sitting and massage your muscles a bit. (Ask for your complimentary
travel tennis balls the next time you are in for a treatment:)
If you are flying or traveling overnight, you may want to take a mask
that blocks our all light. Giving our eyes total darkness tells our
brain to produce melatonin which helps us sleep.
During travel breaks (between flights, on the road) squat with your
feet flat on the ground for a few minutes. This simple position
stretches and refreshes your legs, hips and back. At the end of your
trip lay down and elevate your legs at a 90 degree angle with your
hips. This will relieve muscle fatigue in your legs. (Pregnant women
and women having menses should only elevate 30-40 degrees.)
Remember, a post-trip massage is a great way to recover from your
vacation!
