Good Morning Region V,

Sorry to inundate you with e-mails – here is the latest and greatest on the budget attached below.   Speaking of inundation – if you are interested in keeping an eye on the activities of the Capitol, the SacBee offers their Capitol Alert a daily update – but caveat emptor: ok, well it is free, but beware - there is a morning update, often a midday update, and a evening update and sometimes one or two more e-mails thrown in for good measure if there is a hot button issue being discussed or voted on…

Also, if you are interested in tracking legislation check out these sites:

www.leginfo.ca.gov – this site has the Leg Daily file as well as allows you to sign up for alerts when there is action on particular legislation – but you have to do it bill by bill and it helps to know if it is AB or SB and the author as some bills have duplicate numbers.   So, if you are interested in say, AB 2261, SB 1437, AB 1585, AB 540, SB 1301, et cetera – you need to look up each bill and type in your e-mail address – but the site will e-mail you if there is a new vote, if the bill goes to committee for review, if it is placed on the inactive file…. You can also get the exact wording on the bill as viewed by the Senate and Assembly as well as summaries, histories, amendments, and current status and vote counts.  This also has a page to help you look up your legislators and get their contact info too as well as many other features.  Very useful tool.
www.aroundthecapitol.com is another good site for bill information as well as op eds from all sides – they have links on there for the three major political ideologies – right, left, middle as well as other interesting information.  This site also has exact bill wording as well as summaries, headlines, comments, and “Election Track” a neat page with links and information on campaigning, political groups lobbying for and against legislation and propositions, and much more and I believe is sponsored/maintained by Scott Lay of the Cal Comm College League.
http://www.faccc.org/index.htm is yet another great site – this one is put out by the Faculty Association.  Of particular interest are links that they have on the right hand side:  “Point and Click letter writing campaign” is a FANTASTIC way to e-mail your Cal Congress people, and it is as easy as 1,2,3.  Register – they are looking for a name, address (I tend to use the Columbia College Address so they know what school I am representing) and an e-mail address.  You can simply point and click and letters will be sent to your legislators, or you can download and edit messages and send them off and tell the officials in Sacramento what you think of the bills they support, what you feel are the issues they should vote on et cetera.  The only limitation is that you have to register each time you log on and you can only point and click on the issues that the FACCC have chosen to address, but don’t let that be a deterrent – there is no easier way to let your elected representatives know your thoughts!  Below that, they have a great link with a red button called Leg Tracker and this has the faculty’s recommended stance on the various bills being voted on as well as a nice little synopsis of what each bill entails – this is great to get you up-to-date on the issues without having to wade through entire bills which often are lengthy and difficult to read.
Last but not least, check out www.StudentSenateCCC.org – our SSCCC website – this has links to many more sites, recourses, has our Constitution and Bylaws, presentations used at previous general assemblies, information on the regions and the schools attached to each, senator bios, committee membership and links, samples and guidance on resolution writing as well as all the resolutions ever presented to the body (all 110 Cal Comm Colleges and their delegates) and information on whether the various resolutions passed or failed.

Let me know if you have any questions – I am available pretty much day or night via e-mail, text, and or phone call.  (E-mail or text are the best ways to track me down and get a rapid response especially if I am in class, working, in committee, studying or driving – I am one of those bad people who tend to let my voicemail stack up a bit before checking…)

Happy reading!

AM Alert: Dubious record

No doubt you've heard by now that legislative leaders have reached a tentative deal with Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger on a $104.3 billion budget.

Schwarzenegger wanted them to strengthen a rainy-day fund and rescind a maneuver to over-collect income tax from residents. They agreed.

The Assembly and the Senate are scheduled to vote on the final changes today, 81 days into the fiscal year, capping the longest budget delay in California history.

"It appears that we have an agreement," said Schwarzenegger press secretary Aaron McLear.

"I am glad it's over," Senate President Pro Tem Don Perata said in a statement.

"Those two points close the deal," Assembly Speaker Karen Bass said.

The Senate is scheduled to take up the matter at 4 p.m., the Assembly at 5 p.m.

Meanwhile, Dan Walters writes in his column today: "Budget mavens are already talking about at least a $7 billion hole in the 2009-10 budget, even if the economy doesn't worsen."

Now for other news: There's a new Field Poll out today on how California voters view President Bush.

The numbers don't look good for him in his final year in office.

Among registered voters, 68 percent said they disapprove of the job Bush is doing. Only 25 percent said they approve.

That's way lower than the 37 percent approval rating his dad got and the 34 percent approval rating Jimmy Carter got in their final years in the White House.

As usual, find the exclusive statistical tabulations only on Capitol Alert.
