Hi Dave,

I΄m answering first your request and the I give some some info about
my Rebetiko Dictionary which we΄ll be published during the autumn of
2008.

You can see the lyrics of the song in
http://stixoi.info/stixoi.php?info=Lyrics&act=details&song_id=14260.

In details:

1. Pono ( Πονώ) means feel pain (ache). In rebetiko it is used for
something uncountable i.e. love-ache.

2. The noun "fonias-issa" (φονιάς) means "killer" but in rebetiko
phraseology it is also used mosttly in connection with love
affairs
and love passion. Several synonyms is kakourgos-a, dolofonos-
issa. It can be translated as heartless

3. "paraponiaris-issa" is the person who murmurs/complains. In
rebetiko but even in everyday Greek it is used in a tender way,
meaning the person who express his/her grievance/grief(...) about
life, treatment from another person etc.

4. maraino, v. -omai(μαραίνω, -ομαι), (synonym, marazono)
(μαραζώνω, -ομαι) means, to fade away, to writhe, to wither, to
wilt

I΄m giving here the word fonias as I have explained it in my
Dictionary:

A free translation of "Pono, de me lypasai"(1937. K.Skarvelis, G.
Kavouras) would be like following:

"I΄m in pain, don΄t you feel compassion (pitty) for me?"

My eyes are crying everyday for your shake,
my heart feels pain and breaks into pieces

I΄m sighing but you don΄t pay attention, you heartless, you don΄t feel
pitty,
You΄re having fun with somebody else
and you forget what you had promissed

Cheers Kavouras, you murmurer/complainer/griefer

You don΄t even come to see me, you don΄t care of where I am,
you only gave me a cause to suffer

Opa!

You faded me away, you hurted me, I wish you get through the same. I
wish you get the same pain in heart and be ruined

As for the Dictionary, it will be published in Greek. It is not just a
lexicon it is also a deeper "sociologic" (in everyday language)
commentary of words and meanings in Mikrasiatiko and rebetiko. The
main reason I did it was to see it published in English therefore, it
contains thousands of words and expressions which are known by Greeks.
I don΄t have the right contacts so on, so that every idea or healp
instead of finding a publishing house or University which would be
interested is welcomed.

many greetings
Kostas Ladopoulos

Well, I'm not sure what I can do in the way of helping you find
contacts, but I'll certainly try my hardest. Absolutely count me in
the list of buyers when it's published! It sounds like a truly
wonderful project and to have it in english would be even better. As
for the song, now I'm gonna see if I can find it. I don't know it by
name alone.

Later,
Tiffanitsa

Excellent, Kostas, but I only noted the translation after having
translated the song already! I could have saved the time but, ok it
was not much time consuming.

Regarding Paraponiaris, in your dictionary you are 100 % right, of
course, but especially for Kavouras, he has been given the nickname
Paraponiaris for reasons unknown to me.
