Job Title: Assistant Director of Urban Education Program

Description:

Start Date: August 1, 2007

The Peace Corps Fellows Program (www.tc.edu/pcfellows) has been an
integral and important part of the fabric of Teachers College and the
New York City Public Schools since 1985. Being the first of over 35
Fellows/USA programs nationwide, over 600 Fellows have graduated from
the Program and their contributions to the City's high-poverty schools
have been substantial. The PCFP is considered a flagship program in
addressing Teachers College's reinvigorated mission to seek
educational equity and social justice in urban schools and
communities.

This Assistant Director is primarily responsible for: 1) much of the
daily administration of the Peace Corps Fellows Program; and 2)
coordinating all aspects of the AmeriCorps Professional Corps Program
at Teachers College. The Assistant Director reports directly to the
Director and works in collaboration with her/him in designing and
implementing program initiatives and sharing Program outcomes with
AmeriCorps and other supporters. She/he will also work closely with
the other Assistant Director to support her/his work in highlighting
the accomplishments of our teachers, updating Fellows' support
materials, etc. This work necessitates both a vision of the bigger
picture and an attention to detail. The ideal candidate is one who is
particularly driven toward critically assessing the needs of both
urban communities and urban teachers. The PCFP seeks a staff of
thoughtful, motivated and diverse educators who have a good sense of
humor and a positive outlook to assist our Peace Corps Fellows in
their work as urban educators.

Responsibilities:

1. Coordinate AmeriCorps Education Awards at Teachers College
(includes grant writing and administration, file maintenance, etc.).
2. Teacher Training Support - Work with other assistant director in
implementing training/support plan (includes event planning for
seminars, professional development, etc.).
3. Research - Assist in gathering qualitative and quantitative data
regarding Program's impact (from Fellows, alumni, mentors, city
schools and TC faculty).
4. Organization - update/revise staff procedures and materials related
to routine tasks (applicant, fellow & alumni support) as well as
systems for interviewing/reviewing candidates.
5. Liaison - develop strong relationships within and outside College
(e.g. Office of Teacher Education-Certification, Financial Aid,
Residence Life, Registrar, Health Services, our database consultant,
etc.).
6. Other programmatic and administrative tasks as needed.

Qualifications:

1. Nuanced understanding of urban schools and communities.
2. BA/BS or equivalent required. An advanced degree preferred, in an
appropriate field.
3. Each candidate should demonstrate evidence of his/her ability to
work effectively with faculty, staff and students.
4. Excellent written and oral communication skills.
5. Previous administrative experience and strong organizational
skills.
6. Flexibility, self-directedness, willingness to take on
administrative tasks as necessary.

Qualifications Preferred, But Not Required:

1. Knowledge/experience in teacher training.
2. Knowledge/experience in AmeriCorps, service-learning or NYC
schools.
3. Experience working with urban populations, schools and/or community
organizations.
4. Desktop publishing and webpage design skills.
5. Grant-writing experience.
6. Peace Corps teaching or youth development experience.
