Police break up cockfights

POLICE today broke up an Adelaide cockfighting ring as almost 20 roosters
were being prepared for the fights.

A man was arrested for allegedly organising the event and 24 people reported
after a squad of about 12 police raided a property at Waterloo Corner in
Adelaide's northern suburbs, a police spokesman said.

He said police seized 17 fighting cocks and pairs of spurs that were to be
used on the animals.

"They got there just before the fights were about to start," the spokesman
said.

"They were about to have a fitting up of the birds and place the spurs."

He said cockfights were broken up in the same area of Adelaide earlier this
year.

The RSPCA was working with police to stop the events and deter fans of the
sport, he said.

The arrested man was expected to be bailed later today following the raid.
