Sanskrit Vangmaya Kosh is an excellent, painstakingly researched Encyclopedia of Sanskrit literature in Hindi. It is the result of a lifetime of scholarship, research and review, and is one of the best efforts of it’s kind.

It has been compiled by the renowned Sanskritist Dr Shridhar Varnekar based on a comprehensive study of all the branches of learning on a wide variety of subjects, that have contributed to Sanskrit literature.

It consists of three sections:

  • Section 1 ग्रन्थकार खण्ड

Granthakara Khanda (572 pages)

Section 1 lists the names of all the writers who have written in Sanskrit, along with brief biographies and a list of their works. In addition, it provides a comprehensive introduction to Sanskrit literature, with special emphasis on the eighteen Puranas and the two epics, the Ramayana and the Mahabharata. In fact, the entire narrative of the Mahabharata has been provided in simple Hindi, divided into eighteen parvas {chapters}.

The major religious and philosophical traditions of India are well represented in this section. Philosophical texts have been categorised on the basis of the school they belong to, and each category is well represented.

For instance, the topic Nyaya Granthas covers texts belonging to Gangesha’s school as well as Jain and Buddhist texts on Nyaya, under their own subcategory.

Similarly, the rubric Yoga not only covers the Patanjali school but also introduces the reader to Hatha Yoga, Buddhist Yoga, Bhakti Yoga, Karma Yoga and Jnana Yoga.

Likewise, the introduction to Vedanta offers a clear presentation of the principles of Shankara, Ramanuja, Vallabha, Madhva and Chaitanya.

  • Section 2 ग्रन्थ खण्ड

Grantha Khanda (560 pages)

Section 2 lists the various texts that have been composed in Sanskrit over the centuries. They are listed in alphabetical order.

  • Section 3 परिभाषा खण्ड

Paribhasha Khanda (782 pages printed in 2 books)

Section 3 has been divided into five sub-sections:

धर्म विभाग Dharma Vibhaaga

अर्थ विभाग Artha Vibhaaga

काम विभाग Kaama Vibhaaga

मोक्ष विभाग Moksha Vibhaaga

न्यायसंग्रह विभाग Nyaya-samgraha Vibhaaga

Dharma Vibhaaga provides precise definitions of technical words found in original and exegetical texts of the Vedic, Jain and Buddhist traditions. In addition, it also provides definitions of terms found in texts related to Jyotisha Shastra, Vyakarana Shastra, Chhanda Shastra, Ayurveda, etc.

Artha Vibhaaga provides precise definitions of technical terms found in texts such as Kautiliya Arthashastra, Shukra Niti, Manu Smriti, etc.

Kaama Vibhaaga provides precise definitions of technical terms found in texts on erotica, dramatics, literature, poetics, prosody, art, music, painting and sculpture.

Moksha Vibhaaga provides precise definitions of technical terms found in prabandhas {commentaries} such as Shankara Bhaasya of the Shrimadbhagavadgita, Vedanta Padaartha, Desha Dipika, Sarvadarshana Samgraha, Artha Samgraha, Jaina Dharmaamrita, Bharatiya Darshana, etc.

Nyaya-samgraha Vibhaaga provides precise definitions of a huge number of technical terms found in ancient and medieval Sanskrit texts on formal logic.
