THE AMAZING ASHALATA BHOSLE!
~ Manish Modi
ASHA BHOSLE
Sangli: 8 September 1933
Mumbai: 12 April 2026
I am deeply saddened to hear of Asha Bhosle’s demise. What a marvellous singer she was, and what an unparalleled body of work she leaves behind.
Along with her sister Lata Mangeshkar, she shaped not only Indian music but the very soundscape of the twentieth century; their contribution to world music is vast, distinctive, and unlikely ever to be equalled. She is acknowledged as the most recorded singer in music history. She sang over 20000 songs in more than 20 languages.
I grew up on her songs. They were the soundtrack to my life, capturing every shade of masti, love, seduction, and devotion. She sang cabaret, rock, pop, ghazals, classical, and semi-classical songs with effortless grace. She gave voice to the nava rasas, infusing each note with personality and soul. From the age of Shammi Kapoor to the era of Ritik Roshan, she lent her voice to some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable and spirited musical numbers.
Her collaboration with my favourite pop singer Boy George, on the 1991 track “Bow Down, Mister” was especially endearing to me.

Her real-life partnership with Rahul Dev Burman, our beloved Pancham Da, was a beautiful coming together of two geniuses, expanding the possibilities of Indian film music in ways that will endure beyond our collective lifetimes.

A treasury of melody, mood, and memory.
She could sing anything she set her heart to. Nothing in the world of singing was beyond her.
I always admired her style, her astonishing range, and that irrepressible verve. If Lata Mangeshkar was the Rolls-Royce of Indian music, then Asha Bhosle was its Ferrari: daring, vibrant, and impossible to ignore; truly a force of nature, then and forever.
I pray that her soul attains kṣāyika samyaktva and mokṣa at the soonest.
