THE AMAZING ASHALATA BHOSLE!
~ Manish Modi

ASHA BHOSLE
Sangli: 8 September 1933
Mumbai: 12 April 2026

I am deeply saddened to hear of Asha Bhosle’s demise. What a marvellous singer she was, and what an unparalleled body of work she leaves behind.

Along with her sister Lata Mangeshkar, she shaped not only Indian music but the very soundscape of the twentieth century; their contribution to world music is vast, distinctive, and unlikely ever to be equalled. She is acknowledged as the most recorded singer in music history. She sang over 20000 songs in more than 20 languages.

I grew up on her songs. They were the soundtrack to my life, capturing every shade of masti, love, seduction, and devotion. She sang cabaret, rock, pop, ghazals, classical, and semi-classical songs with effortless grace. She gave voice to the nava rasas, infusing each note with personality and soul. From the age of Shammi Kapoor to the era of Ritik Roshan, she lent her voice to some of Hindi cinema’s most memorable and spirited musical numbers.

Her collaboration with my favourite pop singer Boy George, on the 1991 track “Bow Down, Mister” was especially endearing to me.

Her real-life partnership with Rahul Dev Burman, our beloved Pancham Da, was a beautiful coming together of two geniuses, expanding the possibilities of Indian film music in ways that will endure beyond our collective lifetimes.

My absolute favourite Asha Bhosle Songs:

Chanda Mama Duur Ke — Vachan

Sathi Haath Badhana — Naya Daur

Udein Jab-Jab Zulfein Teri — Naya Daur

Eena Meena Deeka — Asha

Aaiye Meharbaan — Howrah Bridge

Chaudhavin Ka Chaand — Chaudhavin Ka Chaand

Ishaaron Ishaaron Mein — Kashmir Ki Kali

Yeh Hai Reshmi Zulfon Ka Andhera — Mere Sanam

Jhumka Gira Re — Mera Saya

Aaja Aaja — Teesri Manzil

O Haseena Zulfonvali — Teesri Manzil

O Mere Sona Re — Teesri Manzil

Piya Tu Ab To Aaja — Caravan

Zindagi Ek Safar Hai Suhana — Andaaz

Dum Maaro Dum — Hare Rama Hare Krishna

Jaan-e-Jaan Dhundhta Phir Raha — Jawani Diwani

Duniya Mein Logon Ko — Apna Desh

Chura Liya Hai Tumne Jo Dil Ko — Yaadon Ki Baaraat

Jaaneman Jaaneman — Chhoti Si Baat

Yeh Mera Dil — Don

In Aankhon Ki Masti Ke — Umrao Jaan

Dil Chiiz Kya Hai — Umrao Jaan

Kisi Nazar Ko Tera Intazaar Aaj Bhi Hai — Aitbaar

Mera Kuch Saamaan — Ijaazat

Bow Down, Mister

Kitaabein Bahut Si — Baazigar

Tanhaa Tanhaa — Rangeela

Rangeela Re — Rangeela

O Bhanvare — Daud

Kahin Aag Lage — Taal

Jaanam Samjha Karo — Jaanam Samjha Karo

Kabhi To Nazar Milao — Kabhi To Nazar Milao

Radha Kaise Na Jale — Lagaan

Kambakht Ishq — Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya

Also special are her renderings, in her own inimitable style, of perennial favourite ghazals:

Aaj Jaane Ki Zid Na Karo — originally by Farida Khanum
Chupke Chupke — originally by Ghulam Ali
Aavargi — originally by Ghulam Ali
Aahista Aahista — originally by Jagjit Singh
Ranjish Hi Sahi — originally by Mehdi Hasan
Raftaa Raftaa — originally by Mehdi Hasan

A treasury of melody, mood, and memory.

She could sing anything she set her heart to. Nothing in the world of singing was beyond her.

I always admired her style, her astonishing range, and that irrepressible verve. If Lata Mangeshkar was the Rolls-Royce of Indian music, then Asha Bhosle was its Ferrari: daring, vibrant, and impossible to ignore; truly a force of nature, then and forever.

I pray that her soul attains kṣāyika samyaktva and mokṣa at the soonest.
