Dr Peter Flügel is one of the leading scholars of Jainism in the West. Besides having a number of publications to his credit, his claim to fame is the establishment of the Centre of Jain Studies at SOAS, London. Their annual conferences have ensured that modern Jain scholars interact with each other on a regular basis and no one is reinventing the wheel.

Although trained as an Indologist, Dr Peter Flügel specialises in social anthropology. His study of Jain history with special focus on the aniconic traditions of Jainism is unmatched.

This book presents 12 of his essays, addressing the history, doctrine, organisation and ways of life of Jain mendicant orders, sects and schools, largely based on the amurtipujaka {aniconic} tradition of Jainism. This book is dedicated to his lovely wife, Dr Ingrid Schoon.

Here is a list of the 12 articles:
1. Demographic Trends in Jaina Monasticism

2. Sthanakavasi Jain Tradition
3. Historical Sources on the Lonka Gaccha and Sthanakavasi Traditions in Johannes Klatt’s Jaina Onomasticon
4. The Unknown Lonka: Tradition and the Cultural Unconcious

5. A Jaina Mendicant Council: Proceedings of the 8th Sthanakavasi Jaina Brihad Shramana Sanghiya Sadhu Sadhvi Sammelana, Indore

6. Terapantha Shvetambara Jain Tradition

7. The Ritual Circle of the Terapantha Shvetambara Jains
8. The Codes of Conduct of the Terapantha Shramana Order
9. Spiritual Accounting: The Role of the Kalyanaka Patra in the Religious Economy of the Terapantha Shvetambara Jain Ascetics
10. Jain Monastic Life: A Quantitative Study of the Terapantha Shvetambara Mendicant Order

11. Present Lord: Simandhara Svami and the Akrama Vijnana Movement
12. Beyond the Hindu Frontier: Jaina-Vaishnava Syncretism in the Gujarati Diaspora
