About Jainism

Jain Dharma combines the goal of well-being in this world with the ultimate aim of spiritual liberation. The Jain tradition has made significant contributions to Indian culture and society through its strong espousal of the values and ideals of non-violence and asceticism.

Jainism is among the oldest religions in the world. Today it is found both in India and among the Indian diaspora communities. The study of the history, literature, and teachings of the Jains and their social and cultural contexts as well as the contemporary ritual, devotional, and ascetic practices is an important field of scholarship.

About the Encyclopedia

Brill's Encyclopedia of Jainism makes available up-to-date research on main aspects of the Jain traditions in original essays written by some of the world's foremost scholars on Jainism. The encyclopedia seeks to present a balanced and impartial view of Jainism with a focus on both historical and contemporary traditions and institutions.

The essays are arranged thematically and address a wide variety of topics, including the human condition (cosmology, Universal History, and karma), the pantheons, historical perspectives, regional cultures, renunciation, lay society, rituals, devotion, visual and material culture, time and space, literature, and philosophy and logic.
