Environmental Services is designing a project that will upsize 100 feet of 115-year-old public sewer pipe on SE 48th Avenue. This improvement will increase sewer capacity, reduce backups, and help prevent street flooding.
Project Area
This project is located on SE 48th Avenue between SE Hawthorne Blvd and SE Harrison Street. The pipe replacement is proposed specifically between maintenance holes on SE 48th Avenue between addresses 1749/1742 and 1817/1818.
 Pipe work is a small section located on SE 48th Avenue approximately mid-block between SE Hawthorne Boulevard and SE Harrison Street

Schedule
Construction is tentatively scheduled to begin in spring of 2026.
What's Happening Now
Upcoming Work: Potholing and Tree Root Inspections
In the coming weeks, crews will perform exploration work in the street. This includes digging small holes or removing small sections of concrete to confirm the location of underground utilities and nearby tree roots. This process is called "potholing."
Information gathered during this work helps engineers refining the final design and determine the safest construction methods while minimizing impacts.
What to Expect
- Work hours: Monday through Friday, 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.
- Brief periods of noise, dust, and minor vibration during drilling
- Temporary removal of on-street parking within the work area
- Driveway access will be maintained, though short delays may occur
- After inspection work is complete, holes will be backfilled and restored with asphalt patches
