Hi all – Please share widely and forward to candidates interested in working for RIDEM Office of Water Resources this summer. See attached and details below on the 3 separate positions.

We are looking for applicants for our monitoring internships, as well as people interested in community outreach at our public boat ramps as boat greeters (new program this year!) who will be managed by our boat greeter coordinator. Apologies for cross-posting.

(May-October, start/end dates negotiable; preference given to candidates with full time availability through the end of Sept) – Position located in Providence, RI

A Seasonal Water Monitoring Field intern assists in water quality monitoring and ecological field surveys in surface waters by calibrating sampling equipment, obtaining field samples, and delivering samples to the analytical laboratory; making and recording field measurements and observations; assists in field assessment of freshwater wetlands and marina pump out facilities; assist in compiling and entering environmental monitoring data into electronic databases; and other duties as required. Recommended Qualifications: Preferred applicants have completed a Bachelor’s Degree by June 2026 in an environmental science related field. The candidate should possess excellent communication, organizational, and navigational skills and is familiar with computer applications (MS Office, GIS applications, statistical software) and related equipment (GPS units, water quality meters, copiers, scanners, digital camera, microscopes). Must show initiative in the office and represent RIDEM in a responsible, professional manner. Candidates able to identify freshwater aquatic plants, cyanobacteria, algae or invertebrates and/or have previous experience in any of the following focus areas are especially encouraged to apply: community outreach, policy, data collection, data entry or databases, water quality sampling, lakes, rivers, wetlands, soils and/or hydrology.

Note: Field positions require flexibility, positive attitude towards teamwork as well as ability to work independently. All field applicants must be able to swim, lift 35 lbs. overhead, and possess a valid driver’s license (vehicle will be provided for field transportation). Experience boating (motor) or paddling (canoe/kayak) is preferred. Familiarity with small boat operation in marine waters required for some positions. Fieldwork often requires working safely in undesirable conditions. Candidate must traverse variable terrain with sampling gear, avoid contact with poison ivy, accommodate being wet or muddy, and tolerate flying/biting insects, wildlife, intense sun, high/low temperatures, and inclement weather.

(Memorial Day – Labor Day, start/end dates negotiable, full time (35 hours a week) or part-time (15-25 hours a week) negotiable – Various positions statewide)

A Seasonal Boat Greeter is responsible for representing RIDEM in a professional, courteous manner at the DEM State Boat Ramp(s) at lakes, ponds, or rivers where they are assigned to interact with the public, boating community.  A Boat Greeter interacts with boaters to assist with detailed visual observations of parked motor boats, paddle craft, trailers, and associated gear. Greeter may educate visitors about aquatic invasive species, explain decontamination methods, and distribute brochures or educational materials. Greeters must operate handheld tablet to record data on boat traffic, boater interactions, and plant observations. Boat greeters must be able to work outdoors in various weather conditions. State Boat ramps experience high visitation during peak periods such as weekends and holidays, therefore weekends and holiday shifts are required.

Recommended Qualifications:

Eligible candidates must have reliable mode of transportation, and must be at least 16 years of age. Comfort engaging with the public, strong interpersonal and clear spoken communication skills required. Essential job functions require movement across uneven terrain, reaching with hands and arms, bending, kneeling or crouching low to the ground, as well as close and distance vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

In addition to the duties described for Seasonal Boat Greeters, a Seasonal Boat Greeter Coordinator provides environmental education and outreach and functions in a supervisory capacity under the direction of and in cooperation with a full-time Environmental Scientist. A Seasonal Boat Greeter Coordinator is responsible for representing RIDEM in a professional, courteous manner at events and at the DEM State Boat Ramp(s) at lakes, ponds, or rivers where they are assigned to interact with the public, staff and boating community.  A Boat Greeter Coordinator directs trainings and is responsible for establishing, posting, and implementing weekly and daily work schedules and location assignments to insure appropriate staff coverage at boat ramps throughout the state.  Coordinators train staff to interact with boaters to assist with detailed visual observations of parked motor boats, paddle craft, trailers, and associated gear. This position frequently visits RIDEM boat ramps during the summer to provide feedback to boat greeters. Coordinators may educate staff and visitors about aquatic invasive species, explain decontamination methods, and design brochures or educational materials. Coordinators may troubleshoot software on handheld tablets to record data on boat traffic, boater interactions, and plant observations. Coordinator will review incoming data, provide feedback to staff, and summarize boater interactions at the end of the season (October 15).
