Hello,

The PTA is considering raising the dues to $10 per member this year.   One person on the membership committee feels strongly that the dues should be no more than $9 and 2 for $16.  Any input/thoughts on this?  Also, the PTA will be accepting credit cards  this year for membership and most likely, fundraisers too.

I think that $10 is fine to brain storm with other parents for my daughter .

i know i talked to parents last year who said they couldn't afford the $7 to join because $$ was too tight for them.  i like the idea of doing a less than double the price if 2 join together to get both parents/parent & grandparent involved.    $9 seems reasonable....people might not follow thru with a $3 price increase......

Well, would you prefer to NOT have a PTA at all?   Nothing for the children?  No Fall Fest, no Ice Cream Social/bingo, no $ for the teachers for class supplies like new pencil sharpeners (that we reduced already this year from $100 to $50), No movie nights, no Parent's Night Out, no Time for Kids/Weekly Readers, no Author's visits to the library/literary assembly, no VOICE to be heard for your child and others at the State and National PTA levels where they lobby for family and child friendly legislation?  No PTA cards of condolence (on behalf of the entire PTA) when a teacher's close family member dies?  No Sports Day medals (the PTA cut that budget line down to $800 this year, but last year paid for new canopies to keep the kids out of the rain and sun), no scholarship money to grads who attended RHR?  NONE of that?  Did you know that we are starting this year off with $7K less than we did last year?  Did you know we NEED to raise $13,500 this year or there may be no PTA next year - and NO money for these activities or more?

How much is all that worth to you?  Is $10 REALLY too much to ask?

BTW, I'm sorry if that sounds "snooty" - it was not intended that way.... but when my husband read it he thought it was.  Please take it in a "normal" speaking tone of voice...   sorry if it bothers anyone else.  Its just the facts... PTA or no PTA?  To join or not is up to you, fundraise support or not is up to you.

I don't think there is much difference between $7 and $10.
We are in for whatever the PTA needs. :)).

Wow.....people really won't pay $10 to help their kids school???  That's pretty sad. I know my daughter really enjoys all the school activities especially sports day.

To be fair, we do have several one income families where 2-3 dollars could make a difference in joining or not.

Marshella,
I think it would be better to do an anonymous survey to get a better idea of the financial situation of the parents at the school. Maybe setting up the email where the responses are not being viewed by everyone. Wanting to pay an increase and being able to pay an increase in the dues are two different things. I think it's clear by the turnout at the events that the parents care about their kids and the events at the school.

There are many people who may be on a limited income and not able to afford even the $7 dues. That might be hard for some to understand but it's reality. I would hate to have any parents that are willing to be active participants in the PTA not able to join because they can't pay PTA dues. There has to be a reason parents are not joining since there seems to be a clear difference in active PTA members and active parents at the events.

Maybe since some people have expressed that they have no problem with an increase they would be willing to donate to some type of fund that would allow parents who can't afford it to join. We might be missing out on parents who will be valuable additions to the PTA just because they can't afford it. I'd be willing to sponsor someone!! The PTA needs active members not just the dues. In my opinion!!

Dionne,

What a WONDERFUL suggestion!  We can put a line on the membership form so our members can choose to send in double the membership dues to join, with the stipulation that they go to a family wanting to join but not having the funds to do so. OR if they know of a family, they can fill out another membership form on the family's behalf with their permission.    We will then pass the (blank) "pre-paid" gifted membership form on to Ms. Castle so she can select a family in need.

I had also considered, but not sure how to go about it, perhaps giving free memberships to those who volunteer X amount of hours, say.  Any thoughts on that?  (of course the volunteering must really be helping us financially afford their membership by means of perhaps getting a donation for the PTA from a local business worth $25 or more, or working a fundraiser, etc., because it does cost us to have members - we have to pay the local, state, and national dues... it's not just funds that we get to keep/spend on our initiatives.

Hello all,

I am just replying to this discussion now as I have been away on vacation a few days. I hope everyone is having a great summer.

Thanks for a great idea Dionne! We can certainly explore that and start making arrangements if someone wants to donate funds toward another member's dues.

As for the potential raise in dues, VP Marshella was not being rude or snobbish. We are starting out this year with a really, really low amount of funds. The budget had to be drastically cut. We will need to RAISE approximately $13,000.00 just to meet that reduced budget. The frank reality is that unless we raise dues, have full participation with in the fundraisers, or other resources are raised to meet the budget, sadly some events that the students eagerly anticipate attending may not happen. We don't want that to happen but we may have no choice.

We are also in need of additional volunteers this year. I am humbly asking every member if they could give me 2 hours a year with volunteering, assisting, etc at any of our events, etc. An hour here, 30minutes there. No large commitment, just please volunteer 2 hours any way you can. Two hours can make a huge difference.

If anyone has any questions, suggestions, comments, or concerns, please do not hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

April Graham
PTA President

Hello All,
I think some great ideas have been shared and the move to collect dues via credit cards will make a difference by increasing the convenience for parents when attending events.

The PTA has done a great and my son looks forward to many of the events.

Keep up the good work and continue to use this time to brainstorm.

I agree with Dionne.  I would be willing to sponsor someone also.  I need to consider everyone's financial and availability situation.  I know it was easier for me to help and volunteer when I wasn't working but it's harder now that I am.  I pay the dues for my husband and I because I want to have a voice in my child's school, community and academical achievement.

Sandy

P.S.  Marshella, I don't think your message was strong or snooty; it's the facts.
