Hi everyone!
I hope everything is going well! I want to share an exciting opportunity that NLVS is launching this summer.
We are looking for volunteers to get involved with the Shared Medical Appointment (SMA) program! This program is a series of appointments that would bring together 8-10 patients with a chronic medical condition (hypertension) with a group of clinical providers (one physician, dietician, pharmacist and behavioral provider). NLVS students would also be present to help. Sessions will be from 11-2:30 pm on May 31, June 14, June 28, July 12, July 26, August 9 in the NLVS Clinic conference room.
This is an amazing opportunity for medical students to learn to work through cultural differences to form a patient care plan for a very prevalent health concern such as hypertension. There may also be an opportunity to create a research project of this as well down the line.
The structure of the program will be as follows. The SMA appointments will be from 12-2 pm, with the first hour being a group discussion with all the patients and providers and presenting new material to the patients. The second hour would consist of 3 rotations where patients will come up with an action plan for themselves, meet with a physician, and then meet with either a pharmacist/dietician/behavioral specialist.
As NLVS volunteers, some of your responsibilities would include preparing the materials for the session, setting up the session, moderating the group discussions, and helping during the rotations, whether that be helping the physicians take history or helping patients come up with an action plan for their condition.
If you are interested in participating in this exciting opportunity, please fill out the
sign-up form. If you have any further questions, please do not hesitate to reach out! Thank you!
Warm regards,
Run
