Denmark is pioneering the construction of the world's first artificial energy island in the North Sea, marking a significant step in the global green energy transition. This ambitious project aims to create a central hub for vast offshore wind farms, collecting and distributing renewable electricity to Denmark and other European countries.
The island, located approximately 80-100 km off the coast of Jutland, will initially have a capacity of at least 3 GW from surrounding wind turbines, enough to power around 3 million households. There are plans for significant expansion, potentially reaching up to 10 GW in the long term. Beyond electricity transmission, the energy island is envisioned to integrate future technologies like large-scale energy storage and Power-to-X facilities, enabling the conversion of green electricity into fuels like hydrogen for sectors such as shipping and aviation. This initiative underscores Denmark's commitment to achieving carbon neutrality and bolstering energy security across Europe.
