Opening Salvo: “Environmentalists happy with Obama’s Climate Change mention in Inaugural Address”
If we as a people don’t accomplish anything else this century, we should at least get over the nonsensical notion that our environmental health falls under the purview of just one political party. Our environment, our life-support system, affects all of us, regardless of one’s faith, economics, or political leanings. The problem of adapting to and mitigating Climate Change is exacerbated by the delusion that only environmentalists care about this issue. I belabor the obvious because of this story and many like it have appeared recently after President Obama mentioned Climate Change in his Second Inaugural Address:
Environmentalists hail Obama climate change focus WASHINGTON (AP) — Environmental groups hailed President Barack Obama’s warning Monday about climate change, but said the president’s words will soon be tested as he decides whether to approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf Coast. Obama pledged in his inaugural speech to respond to what he called the threat of climate change, saying, ‘‘Failure to do so would betray our children and future generations.’’ By singling out climate change, Obama indicated a willingness to take on an issue that he acknowledges was often overlooked during his first term. He also was setting up a likely confrontation with congressional Republicans who have opposed legislative efforts to curb global warming. (January 22, 2013) Boston Globe
The world‘s most important leader proclaiming to lead on the most important problem of Climate Change is critical and welcome. Though, it is very late in coming. A new report by GreenPeace, Point of No Return | The massive climate threats we must avoid, explains in detail how 14 major fossil fuel projects around the world will put us on a path of 6°C warming if allowed to continue. You cannot read this report without feeling some sense of urgency, as this report (that admittedly, many deniers will scorn) doesn’t exist in a vacuum. Thousands of climate reports from all over the world, including many Climate Change studies that pertain to our Rochester, NY region are pointing to a dreadful scenario by 2030.
Here in Rochester, on Wednesday February 13, 2013, 7PM at the Little Theatre, the film Comfort Zone will be shown as part of the Greentopia Film Festival. This film brings together the work and expertise of many local people to get the word out on Climate Change in our area. It says: “What does climate change mean in Rochester where it may not seem like an obvious threat? While Upstate New York is not concerned with rising sea levels and many wish its climate was a little warmer, the search for answers to how our region is affected by this global phenomenon and what we can do about it offers no easy answers.”
Also, in Rochester City Newspaper, Cornell University’s Dr. Wolfe’s work on Climate Change was highlighted in “Taking stock of the changing climate.” Dr. Wolfe was one of the lead authors in the Northeast section of the Federal Advisory Committee Draft Climate Assessment Report Released for Public Review, which you can comment on until 5pm ET on April 12th, 2013. Find out more about Dr. Wolfe’s work at Cornell Climate Change and watch the video on his work. BTW: Dr. Wolfe is featured in Comfort Zone.
While the big sea change goes on in the US on Climate Change attitudes, there are a still lot of holdouts. Seriously rich and powerful holdouts:
53 senators urge approval of Keystone XL pipeline WASHINGTON (AP) — More than half the Senate on Wednesday urged quick approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline, ramping up pressure on President Barack Obama to move ahead with the project just days after he promised in his inaugural address to respond vigorously to the threat of climate change. A letter signed by 53 senators said Nebraska Gov. Dave Heineman's approval of a revised route through his state puts the long-delayed project squarely in the president's hands. "We urge you to choose jobs, economic development and American energy security," the letter said, adding that the pipeline "has gone through the most exhaustive environmental scrutiny of any pipeline" in U.S. history. The $7 billion project would carry oil from Canada to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast. (January 23, 2013) San Francisco Chronicle
Just when you think you’re making progress, a relatively small but powerful few want to wreck the planet for the rest of us. The Keystone XL oil pipeline is one of those 14 projects in Point of No Return that demonstrates how important it is that President Obama not only mentions ‘Climate Change’ (ending Climate Silence) but actually stands up against the fossil fuel industry.
We have no delusions about how difficult it will be for President Obama to stand up against the powerful political forces, funded by the fossil fuel industry, who don’t want their golden goose cooked. Even if Obama stops this dirty pipeline, it won’t be enough. The fossil fuel industry will get annoyed. Their supporters in our government will get annoyed and plow billions to fight back any efforts to solve this world-wide calamity. One of the most persistent problems will be that the public will probably become annoyed at the change required to shift gears and move to renewable energy. The extreme end of the GOP (who have a lot of money in our elections) will say there’s not even a problem, that Climate Change is a hoax, and the public is suffering for nothing. So, everything Obama accomplishes might be undone by installing a political party that panders to the public’s will not to believe. (There will be the rest of the world watching of course, but we in the U.S. tend not to consider their opinion unless they can bring some kind of economic leverage to bear.) If the public doesn’t get the long-term scope of the Climate Change crisis and accept the struggle ahead, we squander many years in hopeless political squabbles.
Tragically a major political party in our country feels beleaguered by Obama’s statement:
We, the people, still believe that our obligations as Americans are not just to ourselves, but to all posterity. We will respond to the threat of climate change, knowing that the failure to do so would betray our children and future generations. Some may still deny the overwhelming judgment of science, but none can avoid the devastating impact of raging fires and crippling drought and more powerful storms. Inaugural Address by President Barack Obama
Obama’s validation of this crisis clashes with the very message that the extreme end of the Republican Party has been desperately trying to peddle. But addressing climate should not be a political issue at all. It is not the public’s fault that such a small powerful group has chosen such an absurd position, a position that hardens the more tenuous it becomes. Political fighting, and really any fighting at all, over addressing climate change is only going to slow down our collective efforts to address it. Time is critical. Negotiating on this issue is not possible, Nature doesn’t make deals. You either get greenhouse gases down or you warm up our atmosphere even more.
Ultimately, taking a position against addressing Climate Change is absurd, absurd in the way that taking a dislike to breathing oxygen is absurd. It is morally wrong for a political party to our hamper collective attempts to address Climate Change in the way it was morally reprehensible for a political party decades ago to deny people of color equality before the law. Climate Change is upon us, and we don’t have the luxury of bickering over this anymore. Precious time has been lost, and as a result, we’ll have to adapt to a certain amount of warming regardless of what we do. (Unless, of course, we can invent a great big machine that will suck two and a half centuries of anthropogenic carbon dioxide out of our atmosphere. Don’t count on it.)
Obama has now taken charge on Climate Change and many of us will back him up: Join the #ForwardOnClimate Rally On 2/17! Let Rev.Yearwood have the last word: Forward on Climate Rally Feb. 17th! If you live in or around Rochester, NY Get on the Bus to Washington, DC.

We who care about our environment and future need to ‘Occupy’ the Rochester media to change how the public views environmental news.
The great conundrum of our times is that in a time of rapidly occurring Climate Change and a rapid disintegration of the environment that we need to thrive and survive, mainstream media still marginalizes environmental concerns. [Check often for this continually updated list on the possible consequences of Climate Change in our region--supported by facts.] If there isn’t a quick and substantial change in how environmental concerns are reported, edited, and chosen in mainstream media, the public will continue to believe that environmental concerns are merely special interest matters, issues they can avoid if they choose. How can we inform the public and monitor our environment without abridging our Freedoms--in enough time to safe ourselves?

- 1/25/2013 - Cuomo said “We will lead on Climate Change” and Fracking will be “based on science” so he again guts DEC so neither can happen. Ya gotta laugh. Cuomo's budget cuts DEC funding by $53 million The budget cut amounts to a 5.5% reduction in the department's funding. According to the governor's new budget website, that doesn't mean a loss in staffing to the agency. But it does raise questions about the future of fracking in New York. During an interview last week with public radio’s Susan Arbetter, Cuomo said money for additional staff at the DEC, before fracking is approved, isn’t necessary. “If we do it, we’re going to have the money to pay the staff to do it right," said Cuomo. We've also seen some of the largest man-made disasters of all time with the BP oil spill and the Fukishima Daiichi nuclear disaster as only two examples. Many working-class people are buying more efficient cars, consuming environmentally friendly products, and recycling in response to the unfolding environmental crisis; there is also scientific and public consensus the climate of the world is changing due to human activity. Unfortunately, the climate is changing everywhere except Washington and the corporate boardrooms of the world. The majority of solutions offered, from using efficient light bulbs to biking to work, focus on individual lifestyle changes, yet the scale of the crisis requires far deeper adjustments. Global agreements on climate change are nowhere to be seen; the Keystone pipeline continues to be built and hydro-fraking is expanding at a break neck speed. The truth of the matter is that capitalism is a system whose primary goal is profit- and not just small profit but ever expanding profit with a mantra "you grow or you die." Far from an "equilibrium", capitalism's incessant need to expand and consume is much more like metastatic cancer than anything else. It will grow uncontrollably even to the point where it threatens the life of its host. Join us for a discussion on the stakes of our fight and what we can do to turn the tide. - 1/24/2013 - Listened to a great presentation last evening about Monroe County’secopark. There are many hazardous waste items that are too often going down our drains or onto our curbs or other places these items should not go. Ecopark is where that hazardous waste, and stuff that won’t go into your blue bin, goes in our country. Check this very carefully worked out web page that makes it easy to properly get rid of hazardous waste—and tell your friends. When you use the pull down menu to find out what to do about a particular item, you get a description of the hazard and other places you can take the item—like a working or non-working computer. Mostly discarding this waste is free, except for tires, and only for particular items do you need to make an appointment. Consider what you buy and when you are done with it please consider disposing of it correctly. That’s very easy to do in Monroe County. ecopark 10 Avion Drive Rochester, New York, 14624 NOW OPEN! - 1/24/2013 - Great that Rochester City Newspaper, a local media, do another report on Climate Change, including this time an interview with Dr. Wolfe, lead author on the Northeast section of draft National Climate Assessment. The public can make comment on this version (comes out every four years) of the National Climate Assessment here http://ncadac.globalchange.gov/ until 5pm ET on April 12th, 2013. This is where you can join in the dialogue on how our government responds to Climate Change. Taking stock of the changing climate As the climate continues to change, the Rochester area can expect more frequent downpours, heat waves, and dry periods, according to the newly released draft National Climate Assessment. The document, which was authored by climate researchers from across the country, takes comprehensive national and regional views of climate trends. The assessment includes climate projections based on several greenhouse gas emissions scenarios. The document is meant to guide farmers, government officials, businesses, and other people and groups as they make decisions that could be affected by climate change, says David Wolfe, a lead author on the section dealing with the Northeast. The assessment cautions that, because of changes brought on by human activity, the past climate isn't a reliable indicator of future conditions. "Climate change preparedness just makes good business sense at this point," says Wolfe, a Cornell University professor and chair of the school's Climate Change Focus Group. - 1/22/2013 - How strange this headline sounds on Pres. Obama and Climate Change focus. Really, just environmentalists happy? - 1/22/2013 - Being a ‘green’ consumer: I’m not a scientist and neither are most shoppers, so how we going to tell if the products we buy are actually green, or environmentally friendly? I came across this site GoodGuide via Climate One’s, “Lost in the Wash” and it looks like a great way to shop in the future. I have no way of vetting this particular site, but this concept where scientists help consumers interpret what product labels mean so you can make informed choices that will help our environment, is a great idea. Check this site out and other like it, because how we shop and what we buy has a tremendous effect on our environmental health. GoodGuide "GoodGuide is in business to provide authoritative information about the health, environmental and social performance of products and companies. Our mission is to help consumers make purchasing decisions that reflect their preferences and values. We believe that better information can transform the marketplace: as more consumers buy better products, retailers and manufacturers face compelling incentives to make products that are safe, environmentally sustainable and produced using ethical sourcing of raw materials and labor. GoodGuide was founded in 2007 by Dara O'Rourke, a professor of environmental and labor policy at the University of California at Berkeley. Dara is one of the world's leading academic experts on global supply chains - tracking product life cycles from resource extraction into manufacturing, through consumer use to disposal. Products often have hidden and sometimes disturbing stories - stylish apparel made in Asian sweatshops, or baby care products containing cancer-causing chemicals. Dara realized how little we know about the products we bring into our homes every day. Information was either unavailable, too complex to understand, or biased, as marketers make unsubstantiated claims that their products are natural or safe. "
- 1/22/2013 - Climate Change adaption and mitigation must happen quickly and on a very large scale, or we’re just fooling ourselves. The Climate Change EndgameWHETHER in Davos or almost anywhere else that leaders are discussing the world’s problems, they are missing by far the biggest issue: the rapidly deteriorating global environment and its ability to support civilization. The situation is pretty much an endgame. Unless pressing issues of the biology of the planet and of climate change generated by greenhouse gas emissions are addressed with immediacy and at appropriate scale, the matters that occupy Davos discussions will be seen in retrospect as largely irrelevant. Simple Radon Test Can Protect Your Health; New Yorkers Urged to Test for Radon (New York, N.Y.) As part of National Radon Action Month, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency announced steps New Yorkers can take to test and address radon gas. Radon occurs naturally from the decay of uranium in the soil and can accumulate to dangerous levels inside the home. Elevated levels of the colorless, odorless gas are the leading cause of lung cancer among non-smokers. In New York, radon is a problem statewide, in particular, in the Marcellus Shale areas. The EPA is urging people in New York to protect their health by testing their homes. “Testing for radon is the best way to know if people in your home are at risk from this cancer-causing gas,” said Judith A. Enck, EPA Regional Administrator. "Radon is a problem that can be easily fixed, and I urge all New Yorkers to test their homes. If your home is impacted by radon, it is fairly easy to solve." Three local filmmakers set out to answer those questions for Upstate NY. What happens when a global problem comes to my backyard? Check out the preview HERE. - Greentopia Festival "We’re proud to announce and confirm today, that the estimates of Greentopia’s weekend street traffic and attendance at all affiliated events reached new highs of 23,000 people this year. With the resounding successes of Greentopia | FILM, INNOVATION, ECOFEST and MUSIC, along with sanctioned events – WXXI’s Open House, Foodlink’s Festival of Food, Nazareth College’s NAZ GREEN DAY Farmers Market,Sunnking’s Electronics Recycling Drive and The Single Origin Fashion Project at Joe Bean Coffee Roasters – we look forward to seeing that number grow every year. As you read this, we’re already ecstatically brainstorming ideas to make next year’s event even better. Sustainability, a practice that we preach the necessity of, is “the capacity to endure” and, if we’ve proven anything thus far, it’s that Greentopia has the vigor to not only endure but GROW! We’re excited about the outpouring of support we received throughout Greentopia 2012, and can’t wait to explore the possibilities of what we can create next year. Thank you to all of our wonderful vendors and sponsors. Thank you to all of our enthusiastic volunteers. And,most of all, thank you Rochester for rallying around us! None of this is possible without ALL of you. "

- ACTION: Important! Make comment between Jan 14 and April 12, 2013 on Federal Advisory Committee Draft Climate Assessment Report |
- Federal Scientists Release Draft National Climate Assessment WASHINGTON (January 11, 2013) – The United States Global Change Research Program (USGCRP) released its draft National Climate Assessment today, just a week after the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration confirmed the United States experienced its warmest year on record. The report is the flagship climate change assessment for the United States, according to the Union of Concerned Scientists (UCS). “This could help restart a national conversation about climate change,” said Todd Sanford, a UCS climate scientist. “It gives us a road map for climate change. And the road is much bumpier if we continue along a higher emissions pathway.” While the report is in draft form and will not be finalized for months, it integrates developments in climate science since the agency’s last report in 2009. The impacts of climate change – including increasingly high temperatures and rising sea levels -- are more apparent and extreme impacts are becoming more likely as global emissions rise. At the same time, scientists have been able to more definitively link climate change to human activities and have found that human-induced climate change is causing some weather extremes to worsen. The draft assessment includes a number of new scenarios and maps that examine the consequences of a warming climate for various regions, including increased heat and shifting precipitation. - When you consider that our planet is warming and the fossil fuel industry get billions in US subsidies, it’s immoral to end wind tax credits this year. Tell Congress you really care that renewable energy gets a chance on a warming planet. Congress: Show Your Support for Wind Energy! Congress continues to delay renewing the Production Tax Credit, an important financing provision for wind energy. Every day of stalling means more American jobs are in jeopardy. Already, wind-turbine orders for next year are drying up, creating a crisis where layoffs are imminent. Right now, Congress is sitting on a gold mine of clean-energy jobs, but to them partisan politics is more important. You can bet that Big Coal and Big Oil have plenty of allies in Congress, but when it comes time to invest in wind energy, the door is being shut. It's up to you to help open that door again. Tell Congress to support extending the Production Tax Credit, ensuring a job-creating industry continues to grow. Sierra Club

We must plan for this and it will be expensive, but more so if we wait. Raw sewage, trash and personal hygiene products — along with industrial wastewater, household chemicals, urban runoff, herbicides and pesticides — often flow into the lakes after heavy rains. - Sign this online petition against Fracking in Monroe County: Prohibit All Fracking Related Activities on Monroe County Properties, NY Last Tuesday, over 4, 000 petition signatures to ban all Fracking and related activities were delivered to Monroe County Executive Maggie Brooks and members of the Monroe County Legislature. But presumably that wasn’t enough because the press didn’t even show up. Here’s the news that the local news media couldn’t bother themselves to print: Thousands Sign Petition to Ban Fracking and Related Activities On Monroe County Properties. Don't let New York State become a Resource Curse. It would be great if we could march into the Monroe County Legislature next time and fork over 20,000 signatures. SAVE USA WIND JOBS Congress is currently in recess and will reconvene for a “lame duck” session following the November 6th elections. - Feel like you’re stuck in an energy rut? You crave energy but almost everything out there warms the planet. How about Clean Energy Victory Bonds? There’s no getting around it: If you give the fossil fuel billions in tax subsidies they will take it and not give it back; and when they melt the Arctic with their greenhouse gases, they see opportunity with the pristine Arctic environment and start drilling. So what are you going to do? Why not launch a public effort to fund renewable energy, energy that won’t pollute the planet and warm it up beyond our sustainability level, with the collective might our own monies like we did back in World War Two? Victory Bonds. Help push this bill to put renewable energy out in front: Clean Energy Victory Bonds On August 2, Representative Bob Filner and 10 cosponsors introduced the Clean Energy Victory Bonds Act of 2012, H.R. 6275 in the House of Representatives. The bill, officially entitled “To promote the domestic development and deployment of clean energy technologies required for the 21st century,” will allow all Americans to invest in Treasury Bonds for as little as $25 each that will fund a clean energy future. The $50 billion raised from the bonds will fund clean energy programs that support wind, solar, energy efficiency, and electric vehicles in the United States.

- Stopping Fracking in New York State may be the most important thing you do today. Tell Governor Cuomo that Fracking is not a good idea for New York; don’t give into despair that this cannot be stopped; and, make sure your children can’t blame you for not trying stopping this disaster that will befall them. "Despite a record-breaking 74,000 public comments, we still need your help to make Governor Cuomo hear that fracking has yet to be proven safe. It will only take you a couple of minutes. Please tell Governor Cuomo not to put New Yorkers' health at risk. Call 1-866-584-6799 and leave a simple message like, "Protect New York's water, land and air by not permitting fracking in New York. Instead, support renewable energy that will bring good, long-term jobs to New Yorkers!" This phone number goes through Food & Water Watch who is keeping track of the number of calls, and is directed to a recording from the Governor's office asking for your name, address and comments.
