When we committed our 5th PF less than 4 minutes into the game, I remember muttering to myself, "oh, it's going to be one of those types of games..." And it was. 55 total fouls, 80 free throws attempted. Ugly. But fortunately we built up enough of a lead in the 1st half (67-43 at the half) that we probably weren't going to have to worry about whether or not a bunch of guys fouled out at the end.
First look at Nighthawk, and they look like a typical team that David has built. His teams always seem to have an endless number of excellent outside shooters to worry about. A couple of HOF guys on the squad, though probably neither at the peak of their careers in this season. Chris Gatling is quite good at drawing fouls. He went to line 20 times and converted 15. He had 31 points, 10 rebounds, 2 steals, and 2 blocks. Not much offense after him in this game though. Kevin Garnett had 13 points and 10 rebounds, but was just 3-14 from the field. The Fury shot just 34% from the floor. They finished 36-51 from the free throw line.
Riverside outscored Nighthawk 30-2 on the fast break, and bunched together four players with over 20 points. Mitch Richmond (10-17 FG, 4-6 3FG) had 25 points and 8 rebounds. Travis Best (9-12 FG) had 23 points. Alonzo Mourning had 21 points, 8 rebounds, and 4 blocks. Gary Payton had 21 points, 7 assists, and 6 rebounds. Derrick Coleman had 15 rebounds and Olden Polynice had 10 rebounds.
