Dave and I have been brainstorming on list-building tactics and have
the following next steps to recommend:

1. Let's ask our core group to post the petition widget on their site
(per what Nate Silver just did--it's driving 2x the rate of signers
from what we saw yesterday).
2. Let's take the signer list and map it...we can show people how this
is country wide (Dave's idea is to do a heat map so there's some
proportionality--not allowing high-density zipcodes to overwhlem the
picture).

A less-well-baked idea is to connect people to each other by zipcode
(ie. we mail the 10 people from zipcode XXXXX and say, "hello, you are
the Demand Question Time XXXXX gang...a small group of people can
change the world/that's the only thing that ever has...we're depending
on you to grow this movement...we've picked Feb 15 as National Demand
Question Time day...please talk to each other and plan an event to
raise awareness and grow the movement in your community...etc"

Thots?

Would connecting people to each other by zip code violate the "will
not be published" privacy notice on the petition? Or, more
accurately, would people perceive that it does? I think it would need
to be another step of opt-in at that point.

How do I get that widget? Is there code I need to pass on to the motherjones.com techies? Pardon my ignorance.

Here's the basic embed code:

<iframe src="https://spreadsheets.google.com/embeddedform?formkey=dHkyOUtmajQ1M3dzU21jc2RBQ3ZfTmc6MA"
width="760" height="588" frameborder="0" marginheight="0"
marginwidth="0">Loading...</iframe>

Your web person will want to alter the width/height to fit your page.

I don't think so, if we do it in a way that allows opt-in at the
moment of receipt. In other words, we send the 10 people who live in
10706 an email saying, "click here if you want to connect with your
peers in this zipcode who also want question time to happen"...etc.

the main problem with this idea, I think, is that for most zip codes
we probably have a fairly small (less than 5) number of signers...
