Mormon supporters of gay unions take to cyberspace

Associated Press - August 22, 2008 8:05 PM ET

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Prompted by their church's support for a California initiative to ban gay marriage, some Mormons are voicing opposition to the proposed ban on the Internet - saying in cyberspace what they might not be able to express in church buildings.

MormonsforMarriage.com contributor Laura Compton says church members needed a place to discuss the issue and share information. She says MormonsforMarriage comes from faithful members and not an anti-Mormons source.

It's 1 of a handful of Web sites that have been posted on line since June, when church leaders asked California members to give their time and money to help pass Proposition 8. The ballot initiative would amend California's constitution to recognize marriage as only between a man and a woman.

A church spokeswoman says LDS leaders believe the majority of Latter-day Saints understand teachings that surround the gay marriage issue. She says leaders also understand that some members see the issue differently.
