ICANN, the company that controls the suffixes on the Internet like .com and .org, has been planning to expand the allowable endings of web address and, today, has announce all the applications to expand the current system - also known as Reveal Day.
As expected, several companies are vying for .gay including the "community" bidder dotgay, llc. Three other companies have also applied for the .gay suffix and it will become a bidding war at this point.
Missing from the list is .lesbian but .LGBT is in the running by Afillias Limited, the registry operator of the .info and .mobi Top-level domain.

From an LGBT perspective, there are a wide variety of names to take advantage of the new naming system. my personal view is this new system is nothing more than extortion for existing companies to protect their names and a few get-rich-quick schemes for a lucky few. The .gay bid is particularly troublesome if you read how the "community" group dotgay, llc would decide how to sell domains and the plans for the ones they plan to keep.
.LGBT seems a fairer choice in the long run - and a better domain suffix.
