Sex Education versus Abstinence-Only Policy:
Local Screening of Movie Highlights Controversy

PENSACOLA - Gulf Coast TIDE hosts a free screening of the PBS
movie "The Education of Shelby Knox" Sept. 15 at the Downtown
Pensacola Public Library, 200 W. Gregory St. The film chronicles the
struggle of one Southern Baptist teenager who takes on her city's
abstinence-only sex education policy.
Shelby Knox, a high school student in Lubbock, Texas, seems an
unlikely advocate for comprehensive sex education. Despite having
made an oath of abstinence until marriage, Knox takes action against
what she sees as the abstinence-only policy's lack of success.
Lubbock, where schools have adhered to the abstinence-only education
policy since 1995, has some of the highest rates of teen pregnancy
and STD's in the nation.
Knox begins a campaign to change the policy, and the film follows her
throughout the year, as she becomes more and more frustrated with the
school district. Deciding to work "outside the system," Knox allies
herself with a group of gay students who have been denied the right
to form a gay/straight alliance group at the school.
