Washington Post, Times ignore passage of D.P. bill

By KATHERINE VOLIN
Friday, December 16, 2005

ALTHOUGH THE D.C. Council passed one of the country’s most comprehensive
domestic partnership bills on Dec. 6, local residents who read only the
Washington Post or Washington Times would not know about it.

Despite devoting thousands of words and many column inches to Council
votes Dec. 6, to ban smoking in local bars and nightclubs and its
discussion on rising stadium costs, neither publication printed a word
about the Council’s initial passage the same day of the D.C. domestic
partnership bill.

The Council voted unanimously to give preliminary approval to the bill,
which includes full rights of inheritance as well as the obligation to
pay alimony and child support to couples, gay and straight, who register
as domestic partners.
