Lantan University Student Union Letter:

What is there to do as a student at LU? Why, anything you please!
Students go out shooting, collecting beetles, doing scientific and
magical hobbies or visiting friends. We play cards and drink wine and
beer at night, just like students always have. We have formal socials
at Turnip Hall and Crimson Hall, and of course there are the annual
competitions between the three halls, Gylfi, Turnip and Crimson,
including the great Battle of the Summons and the Biggest Explosion!

Don't be shy and keep your nose always in your books. There's lots of
enriching activities to be had by our gentlemen and ladies in
residence. If you have any questions or would like to get involved,
talk to Todd the Brewer at Turnip Hall, last door on the right (the
one with the cool cat! ).

Todd, Brewery Major and Editor of the Student Union Letter.

OOC: something to point out before i go into this is that im
unfamiliar with forgotten realms history geography and all that, so im
just makeing this up for RP purpouses

**a letter sent to Lantan University's headmaster, (or whatever you
call him/her, im still not familiar with this) there is one from the
Student, Ellie, and one from her Mother**

*decideing to read the one from her parents first he/she picks up the
letter*

To the University.

We are letting our Daughter come to your university, against our
better judgement...its not that she is'nt intelligent enough or that
she does'nt want to go, but you see...our Daughter, while intellgent,
has had problems with her mental stability, you see...

when she was a small girl, almost seven, we had a plague in our
village, while my husband and i managed to remain unharmed, our
daughter seemed to get sick for the three of us, she was adventurous
and curious, but quite literally stuck her nose where it should'nt
have been, the next day she was almost white she was so pale, and
shivering, and coughing up blood...the sickness got worse over the
next weeks and during that time she never got better, only worse,
until finally a powerful druid came by our village and managed to cure
everyone in the village with an herbal mix, all exept for Ellie, he
did all he could but in the end she had to pull through it on her own.

well, she did, but...her physical condition suffered a major blow
because of it, she's frail, and sick all the time...not with anything
any physician, cleric, druid, or anyone of that sort can figure out.
and to cope with it...her mind split. she is still very intelligent,
yes...but she is not -smart- with her intelligence, she is...mentally
unstable. its the only way she can cope with her physical
incapabilitys. her mental and physical conditions have highs and
lows, she may have times where she's perfectly sensible and sane, and
seems fine physically but, there are times where she'll be bedridden
and a jabbering lunitic, she seems to spend most of her time between
the two, but there are those fortunate and unfortunate times you may
have to deal with.

to help her with it we have helped her study magic with what little
money we have, but...when we let her go by herself we are..unsure of
the magic she studies, we dont ask because we dont want to cause her
to have an episode...but i believe she's been studying necromancy, we
have no proof but sometimes she says or does something...off, however
i do know she's interested in transmutation, and a little bit in
enchantment. but please, if she IS studying necrotic magic, try to do
something about it...i do not wish my daughter to be one of those evil
wizards who roams the countryside destroying entire citys...*the
handwriteing along this part seems shakey* i love my daughter, but i
do worry about her being there without us...please, be careful with
her.

*the other letter remains unread as to this moment...and Ellie is now
asleep on campus, he sighs wondering what to do*

While we're at it, two "recommendation" letters for Oshnak:

***

Letter One:

"Dear Esteemed Colleagues:

"It is our honor to recommend for admission to Lantan University one of our strongest students, Mr. Oshnak Oggerbank.  Mr. Oggerbank is the recipient of this year's Candlekeep Scholarship, which, as you are no doubt aware, is the most respected academic scholarship in Faerun and provides complete funding for the recipient's education and related expenses, backed by letters of credit on the Banks of Baldur's Gate and Waterdeep.

"We are particularly pleased that Mr. Oggerbank is applying to Lantan, given your institution's world-renowned focus on non-magical 'technology.'  We believe that you will find Mr. Oggerbank's expertise in the study of applied forces illuminating, particularly if demonstrated in closed rooms during daylight hours.  Further, we have found Mr. Oggerbank to be an invaluable participant in experiments involving summoning and conjuration, most especially in circumstances where laboratory assistants have failed to properly inscribe the magic circle.

"Mr. Oggerbank will also, we believe, inspire your student body to new levels of physical achievement.  As the philosophers teach us, 'mens sana in corpore sano.'  Indeed, we recommend that you set aside a sturdy facility for such physical activities, if you have not done so already.  We have found that such an arrangement is, in the end, less costly than the associated repairs.

"We look forward in the spirit of academic fellowship to your acceptance of Mr. Oggerbank.

"Sincerely,

"Ulraunt
"Keeper of the Tomes
"Candlekeep"

Letter Two:

"To Whom It May Concern:

"I am writing in support of the application of one Oshnak Oggerbank for admission to Lantan University.

"As you may have learned, Mr. Oggerbank is the recipient of this year's Candlekeep Scholarship.  Please be advised that his receipt of this award is by no means a reflection on Mr. Oggerbank's academic merit; indeed, we understand that Mr. Oggerbank's highest educational achievement to date has been to appreciate which end of the broom is to be applied to the floor.  Rather, we have determined that this award was part of an attempt by the Masters of Candlekeep to evade taxation on the substantial sums that are nominally to be used for Mr. Oggerbank's tuition and related expenses pursuant to the terms of the scholarship trust.

"It is our understanding that the Masters of Candlekeep, having been presented by our administration with the option of (i) having their keep raided for ninety-five percent of their current assets and then burned to the ground (i.e., the standard fine for tax evasion), or (ii) finding Mr. Oggerbank a legitimate educational opportunity at a qualifying institution of higher learning, have found it prudent to request the assistance of their colleagues at your fine university.  We suspect, however, that Candlekeep might have neglected to disclose the specific circumstances of their request, and we wish to correct any such oversight.

"You might, in fact, find Candlekeep amenable to any ancillary requests or favors that you might choose to extract as a condition of your admission of Mr. Oggerbank.  Indeed, we would view as a personal favor any efforts on your behalf to impose such conditions.

"We sincerely hope that the foregoing encourages Lantan University both to accept Mr. Oggerbank as a student and to wring those smug wizards at Candlekeep dry for their attempt to dodge our tax collectors.

"Scholarship, our royal backside.

"Yours very truly,

"Eltan, Grand Duke of Baldur's Gate
"On Behalf of the Council of Four"
