Companies are keenly aware of innovation because now owning a factory
does not guarantee you sales or market share. Overseas companies are
bringing out products and allow people, with financial resources, to
build products without building a factory, for a competitive price. Low
wages and lots of people creating things have scared big companies into
waking up and seeing they need to be more innovative.
With that said however, they simply use the word, jump up and down and
do business as usual. I am an award winning designer and inventor and I
find it so very funny that people at big companies would rather change
a color on an old product than to take a new product to market. Too
many people do not want to say YES if it means they have to take a
risk. And INNOVATION is RISK's twin.
I often bring new innovations to companies with Patents or Patents
pending, prototypes and even sales data and I get to hear very silly
things. Like the time a $30,000,000 a year company told me my product
would only sell about $10,000,000 a year so they were not interested.
Who would have thought increasing sales by 30% would not be good
enough? Or the time an executive for a major company told me my product
would not sell; as he stood at my tradeshow booth watching me write
thousands of dollars of orders. Or the time... there are too many
people saying no for the wrong reasons. They simply do not want to take
a chance.
In this case I take the chance for them. I build the products, make the
ads and begin selling it. The last time I did that I sold over 700,000
units and today I still make money from the innovation. Too many people
who innovate want to find the magic fairy of innovation who will say
yes to them and give them money and fame for their idea. I say, "BULL!
Bring your own innovation to life!" If you've tried 10 ways and they
don't work then try 10 more.
Currently I am working on developing a product that will require tools
and techniques I have never used. So, I hit the books and make the
calls and move the project ahead. If the project is good then it is
worth working on, learning about and pushing ahead.
So when you see 10,000 ads all talking about innovation take a look at
the 10,000 products and see what they are selling. You will find 99% of
them are selling the same old stuff in new skin. Don't be scared... be
emboldened. You CAN innovate and the Big companies are very scared
about that.
Use that to your advantage and go revolutionize a few industries or
product categories. And if it works or fails who cares. Think about the
stories you'll be able to tell your kids!
