Planned Innovation ...

Clients often bring me esoteric innovation related problems that, to
them, seem unsolvable. Their frustration is clearly visible. They are
always in fiercely competitive markets, always under great pressure to
produce results and always have short timeframes. They need innovation
and they need it NOW!

They tell me their goals, wishes, dreams and how they believe
innovation is their answer. But I see they do not yet even know their
question. You see innovation is first about questions and only second
about answers. Most people do not understand this. You cannot have
answers without first having questions.

Reality sets certain limits on us. Most people think these limits are
greater than they actually are but even the most freethinking of us
recognizes the limits. Facts like our resources, current technology,
skills and time all make up our reality. But the difference between the
frustrated and Innovative is a basic understanding that limits have
limits too.

Innovators know that realities can change. And they can change in an
instant. You simply have to ask the right questions.

I have a tradeshow in about 6 weeks. My existing product line is quite
good but you can never have too many innovative products. Yesterday I
asked myself, "What amazing new product can I bring to this show."
Once I asked the question my search began.

I started by building a reality for me to work in with parameters both
real and imagined. I know I only have 6 weeks, but I also know I have a
CNC R&D Lab, Rapid Prototyping Equipment and skills in product design
and development. I also know that correctly designed prototypes are
products I can sell from while also allowing me to estimate costs,
resolve design problems and even set patterns to help me make short
runs of high quality products to sell. And I have done this in the past
so I can do it again.

The best way to learn is by observation, emulation and finally
assimilation. So if you would like to see Planned Innovation in action
and why clients' pay us so much for what we do then stick around. I
think you will find it interesting and educational to follow along.

I will blog here as much as possible; giving you an insider's look at
how Innovators bring innovations to life and the science/magic behind
it all. I will work to hold nothing back to allow you an unprecedented
opportunity to see, question and learn exactly what goes on inside a
respected New Product Development (NPD) Lab.

One more thing, please realize, I too am in a competitive market and
since the web is non-discriminatory, meaning anyone can see what I am
writing here, I will be concealing things I do not wish a competitor to
know about. I don't mind working but I do mind working for free.
Thank you for your understanding. Enjoy the show.

Regards,
