1. Find your Seed.
What are you trying to innovate? Without knowing this you will be in
the innovation black hole. Plants grow from seeds and innovation needs
a seed to grow from too. If you are looking to build kitchen appliances
selecting a seed will focus you an make each moment of your innovation
session more productive. Selecting a broad seed, "I want to design
appliances that use electricity", will keep your innovation session
open, lose and maybe overwhelm you. Selecting a slim seed, "I want to
design a new toaster", will focus your innovation session and help you
fit within boundaries but also limit you. But begin with a seed to know
what you are trying to do. We find seeds help focus and produce results
in our design sessions more than 98% of the time.
2. Ask kids.
When I have a tough problem I call my kids and my nephews and nieces. I
tell that I am working on and ask for advice. You would be surprised at
how well these little wonders think. They don't usually get the exact
answer I need but I get a different perspective and have a lot of fun
too.
3. MOST/LEAST research.
Search the web for the best products in your category and learn about
them. Then search the web for the cheapest products in your category.
See what the major difference are and how they affect the use of the
product, it enjoyment and cost to make.
4. Unrelated New Technology Research.
Look for NEW technology in an unrelated field. Then see how you can
apply it to your products. If you make bricks and cement you will be
surprised at how you can invent by learning how professional make
Candy. See if there is any possibility of using those techniques to
change your product for the better.
5. Random Word Technique.
Open the encyclopedia and put your finger on a word. See how it applies
to your seed/field. You will be surprised at how many inventions we
make with this technique.
These are all simple and free techniques you can use to innovate. If
you need a moderator to help you can hire a professional inventor to
consult or a company that specializes in brainstorming. But try it
first yourself. You just might be thrilled with the results.
