When I was a kid I remember playing with tin cars and trucks that were
fabricated out of old fish cans, literally. We knew they were old fish
and fruit cans because when you turned them over you could still see
the photo of the product that was to be inside. They were FUN and each
was marked with the symbol, "MADE IN JAPAN". We, my brother and I,
would run those things all over the place and we had a blast! The toys
were simple and cheap but FUN.

Today I see too many products that focus on trying to be cool and
instead look and feel as bland as low priced fake imitation vanilla.
And I know how they come to be the living dead of products. I can even
hear the focus groups cutting all the fun out of the products. And the
lawyers in the law department sucking the adventure out of the product.
It is a shame to let this happen and I think society suffers!

Where have all the amazing products gone? And when did cool turn out to
be so lukewarm. Great designers have an obligation to create GREAT
PRODUCTS. Don't let people smother your innovative designs and ideas.
