Finding new ideas is a big part of design. HOW do you find new ideas is
a big design problem. I bring my kids on invention adventures. We go to
a store, lets say a dollar store or Staples, Office Depot or Office Max
and everyone buys one thing. Then we sit around the table and play. We
spin whatever we bought, we take it apart, we see how many OTHER uses
we can find for it. We make-up new ways to use the existing products or
we find new features to add to a product by making fun of what is
already there. Sure enough, each time we do this we end up with several
great ideas. Lots of fun with the family and lots of great ideas too.
And the whole evening costs me usually between $10 and $20. Try it and
post your results here. Let us know what you find! You just might make
it a monthly event!
