Dear Abraham,
Big news for all the members of Doctors for America. President Obama has asked us to help develop and implement the National Prevention Strategy!
As directed by the health reform law, the President recently created a Prevention Council chaired by the Surgeon General and made up of Cabinet secretaries. The Council will be advised by the President 13-member Advisory Group on Prevention, Health Promotion, and Integrative and Public Health.
Doctors for America's President, Vivek Murthy, was asked by President Obama to serve on the Prevention Advisory Group, and the White House just made the public announcement last week! Read the press release on the President's announcement.
This is a big opportunity and responsibility for all of us. Our challenge will be to capture the experiences and creativity of everyday doctors and med students to shape the prevention future for the nation.
We are going to use this opportunity to build the voices of doctors and make sure that our ideas and perspectives are heard during the ongoing health care debates both in Washington and in our local communities.
We have this opportunity to make a difference on this critical issue because of all your hard work. You, fellow doctors and medical students across the country have chosen to believe that we can create a system that brings access to quality healthcare to everyone, and that doctors can be a critical part of making it happen. This opportunity is your doing, and we will need your ideas and leadership in the coming weeks and months to help us make the most of this new responsibility.
On a personal note, this is also a fitting public recognition of the thoughtful, tireless, and always self-effacing leadership that Vivek has provided us with since day one. Vivek pushes us to think big, holding us true to our core values and the needs of our patients. He is thinking of a million ways every day to make DFA a better place where we can all come to make a difference.
We are in the exciting process of researching and developing a campaign around prevention and welcome your ideas and wisdom. If you have any questions or concerns or want to be involved in the planning phase, let us know!
