Dear colleague, it would be in the fitness of things if some one tells the young generation of newsmen about the work and struggle of these old colleagues for the cause of freedom of press, their struggle for the same cause in the past, such as the rule of Yahya and Bhutto, and especially the circumstances which led to their sentencing by a military court for whipping. If the people are aware of their struggle they would pay the tributes in a better way.

Yes, Its true and the young generation must know about the major struggle from 1948 to 1978 and from 1978 to 2007 and the struggle goes on. Young generation must know struggle against Ayub black laws including Press and Publication Ordinance, struggle against Yahya Khan and Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto's policies of suppression of media, General Zia's worst kind of censorship and flogging of three out of four journalists sentence to one year and 10 lashes each, struggle when Benazir Bhutto banned six newspapers, struggle against Nawaz Sharif when his blue eyed Saifur Rehman threatened journalists with life threat, struggle against Musharraf's ban on media in November, 2007 etc.
However, May 13, "unforgettable lashes" history is available at pfuj website. The four journalists will be visiting Karachi Press Club on the invitation of the kuj on Monday and will talk about one of the darkest chapter in the history Pakistani media.

Mazhar  has the sense of always coming out with good,  novel ideas. It would be very interesting and  informative if a detailed history of struggle for the freedom of  the press is some time written.Presently, for  all the black  laws and deeds of Ayub, Yahya, Bhutto, Zia and his successors, Zamir Niazi's first book, Press in Chains is a good reference. Or WAS it a good reference? For, the periods of Bhutto and Zia have been deleted from the revised version published by Oxford University Press, and despite my  repeated efforts, one except Anjum Niaz joined me and wrote a piece. (To the best of my knowledge.) But, since  tributes are to be paid to these four senior colleagues, those who are in the know of things, please do tell the young generation of their struggle during Yahya, Bhutto and Zia periods. Their contribution  for the restoration of banned newspapers in those days. We'll discuss and deliberate on the press history from 1947 to 1978 and then 1978 to 2007 , as Mazhar suggested,  later on. But the people should know the struggle of  these four prominent people and their contribution during the periods of Yahya and Bhutto and the circumstances of  their sentence by a military court  in Zia's regime. . Instead of expanding the occasion to wider levels, restrict it to the struggle of these four, and let the history, we must and should discuss, but later. .

This is a right step to pay homage to such brave journalists and heroes whose struggle enable us today to stand for our rights and our role is accepted. There should be some acdemic work in the form of refreshing books to make them alive forever.

That I  have tried. But since no one showed any interest, the press did nothing. But that is a side issue. What I suggested is to throw light on the services, struggle and sacrifice  of these  veteran journalists during Ayub, Yahya, Bhutto  and Zia periods, focusing on the circumstances leading to their sentences. What was the immediate reasons?  I am still waiting for some one to come out and tell the new generation. "Koi nahien koi nahien ayega" kya?

It is indeed surprising that a veteran journalist like Mr Idrees Bakhitiar want to know about the services, struggle and sacrifices of these veteran journalists on circumstances leading to their sentences. If by these veterans you mean the four or you mean all the vteran journalists who have struggle. If its about the four, the sentence of lashes during the 1978 movement for lifting the ban itself is proof of their sacrifice. As for the other material there is a research conducted by a student of Punjab University Mass Com in the 90s may help you. The other research was done by Prof Tauseef, which will shortly be in the market in the book form.

It is indeed surprising Mazhar. In your busy schedule my earlier request seemed to have slipped out of your mind (it deserved it). I had asked (see my first comment) to let the younger generation of journalists know about the struggle of these four veterans for freedom of press during Ayub, Yahya, Bhutto and Zia periods, and the circumstances which led to their sentence of whipping by a military court. I even mentioned Zamir Niazi's book for reference. But every one does not have that book. So I wanted some one to come out and tell. My sweet Mazhar expressed surprise that I want to know the details (instead of telling me). Yes I also would like to refresh my memory, but younger friends certainly need to know since they were to pay tributes. Mazhar mentioned some more books, ah, doesn't he know I don't read books, like most of my fellow journalists. And he comes out with some comment. I have not been able to understand what does he mean "If its about the four, the sentence of lashes during the 1978 movement for lifting the ban itself is proof of their sacrifice." Sorry Mazhar, I thought over the years you must have become 'kinder.' But you hurled a difficult riddle for me to solve. Read your sentence and enlighten me what does it mean, please

Being a much junior journalist as compared to Idrees Sahib and Mazhar Bhai, am really enjoying a healthy debate between the two, though spiced up with chilly comments.  Like hundreds or thousands of journalists of my age group, i too want to know that whether the four journalists who are being celebrated and eulogized by us today, rendered sacrifices only during  the military regime of Zia-ul-Haq, or were they also on their toes during Bhutto, Yahya, and Ayub's stints? And if yes, then what kind of hurdles they faced?

I also feel little surprised, ( though i understand why, however i want to pose myself oblivious here for some reasons) that why do we only condemn Zia's regime as far as press freedom is concerned? were the Yahya, Ayub and Bhutto's regime were different? or comparatively better?

As far as my contestable knowledge is concerned, these regimes were no different. Working journalists were attacked, kidnapped, and tortured, and jailed. No doubt they were not publicly whipped, but many senior journalists can vindicate the dreadful conditions vis-a-vis press freedom during those eras. Various newspapers that dared to go against Bhutto, Yahya and Ayub, were closed forcibly closed down, their editors, printers and publishers were arrested and treated as hardcore criminals. my salute to all those journalists who are not being commemorated by us today, but they are our unsung heroes. i also pay tribute to my these four senior colleagues for standing steadfast against a dictatorial regime.
i just want to know, when will we celebrate the heroes who rendered equally tremendous
sacrifices during Ayub, Yahya, and Bhutto's regime?.

Dear Idrees Bakhtiar and other colleagues, I found it very interesting and healthy discussion on struggle for the freedom of press in  Pakistan.  We should be honest to ourselves. But there are many bitter facts which would annoy many about the role of those who became instrumental to the military and other regimes and worked against the cause of freedom of  press. It will be a great contribution. But I suggest before writing of history of this struggle, we should manage to reprint the original press in chain which is undisputed. So that we should basic reference book.

Dear Aamir,
Its good that you raised these questions as questions need to be asked from the people who have the history with them. History is history even if some events we don't like but you can't scape as some of our friends are trying. Idress sahab is my senior and i don't even mind some of his expressions in his latest comment. I have learnt a lot from him in my journalistic career and he knows me and my family well that like any human being i can make mistake but i don't lie.
PFUJ has a very rich history from 1948, from the day in a small meeting held at Burns Garden when S M Law college refused permission to select group of journalist from holding a meeting. First the Sindh Union of Journalists (SUJ) was formed which later converted into Karachi Union of Journalists and gave birth to pfuj. It was formally inaugrated by Aug 2, 1950 by Sir Zafarullah Khan, representing first Prime Minister Liaquat Ali Khan, who could not come for some reason at Khaliq D. Hall, Karachi.
The first PFUJ cabinet includes late M.A.Shakoor, late Ahmed Ali Khan, late Ishtiaq Azhar, late Hamid Zuberi, late M.A.Zuberi, Gayur ul Islam, Asrar Ahmed, Safdar Qureshi and few others.
Mr M.A.Shakoor, who was the first reporter of DAWN (this is what late Zameer Niazi told me) was later expelled because of his from Pakistan because of his strong views but the pfuj continued its struggle and later a strong group of journalists from the than East Pakistan led by former Secretary General Mr K.G.Mustafa. Mr Nisar Usmani, Mr Minhaj Barna, Mr Afzal Khan and hundreds of journalists joined pfuj.
       Dear Aamir,
PFUJ history is full of struggle against all rulers and rules whether its Ayub Khan, Yahya Khan, Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto, Benazir Bhutto, Nawaz Sharif, Pervez Musharraf and the present government. It started with the first struggle against the ban of Karachi Times under Pakistan Safety Act and dozens of black laws including Press and Publication Ordinance, National Press Trust, censorship, ban on newspapers and magazines. Later, Musharraf banned the tv channels and pfuj was the first to launch the movement. Benazir banned six newspapers and pfuj forced her to withdraw the ban. When Nawaz Sharif threatened the media pfuj was the first to react.
PFUJ was the only organisation which reacted when right wing newspapers and magazines were banned by Bhutto, including daily Jasaraat, monthly Urdu Digest, scores of weeklies. Nisar Usmani was in jail when PNA movement was launched. Its all part of our history but the fact remained that journalists were flogged only under General Zia ul Haq and that is why on May 13, we pay tribute to Nasir Zaidi, Khawar Naeem Hashmi, Iqbal Jaffery and Masoodullah Khan. As far as i know none of them were in this profession during Ayub or Yahya rule.
It is also part of history that while journalists were in jail and flogged there were people among us who stabbed in the back and met General Mujeeb and Mahmood Azam Farooqi. Later, they former Rasheed Siddiqui group, which was further splited between PFUJ (RS) and PFUJ (Dastoor).
Just for a matter of record Karachi Press Club was also formed by the Karachi Union of Journalists (KUJ). There are some seniors still alive to tell you the whole history provided people start thinking beyond party line.
I will request you and your members to read Barna sahab's article, "A Movement Called PFUJ," and also four books of Mr Zameer Niazi. I have the first edition of "The Press in Chain" and lot of other material to keep the record update.

It is very interesting and enlightening to read the preceding lines by
the senior journalists. For me all of you are seniors, respectable and
sense of inspiration. I would like to draw you kind attention towards
the solution of a problem raised by some senior journalists.

It has been pointed out that some sections of the books have been
deleted by the Publisher in its latest edition. The publisher is not
ready to include that section. BUT it is not a big issue.

As respected Mazhar Abbas sahab has informed that he has the original
book and other record. Similarly, other people might also possess some
vary rare books, articles or other material related to the struggle of
journalist community.

Bye one stroke, we can achieve two purposes: i.e. to preserve the
record and provide right and full information of the struggle to the
younger generation.

If our respectable people, can scan the original books, articles, and
other record and make them available online, on any website or
resource, so that every can get access to it.

The task must be assigned to any press club or PFUJ body to collect
the material from various people, scan it and publish it online.

Dear Auranzeb,
Certainly the first unedited edition of "Press in Chains" should be reprinted but the decision will be that of Niazi sahab's family and I don't think his son Haris or any other have any issue because as far as my information is concerned they have send the unedited or uncensored text. It need to be probe what went wrong as the people involved in the reprinting or editing are highly respected people. So what went wrong and who was responsible no one know but i have the first edition with me. Even otherwise there are still available who knows what happened in those years and there is no two opinion that pfuj's historic struggle in all these eras.

Mazhar,
I have not pointed out any mistake, nor I would ever like to do such a stupid thing at this forum  --- or at any other, for that matter. I am sorry if you think I pointed out any mistake, or if any remark did hurt you (I could not find any such remark in my piece).  I only wanted to know what do you mean  by the expression "the movement for lifting  ban ..." Please give some detail. What was the ban on?  That detail is still awaited. How the younger generation will know about the sacrifices of these four senior colleagues of mine, if no one would spell them out for them?  Of course Zamir Niazi saheb's books are there, but it would be much better if some one briefly tells the details. Going into the history and raising controversial issues, was not my intention, nor I would like to indulge in it. This is my last comment on this issue, some one tells the details or not. Let the younger  generation find it out by themselves, and let them think that their seniors, instead of writing a few lines to give the facts, had been in the habit of writing longish passages on and on, dragging in matters which were not the subject of the discussion.

Dear Aamir,
Its good that you raised these questions as questions need to be asked from the people who have the history with them. History is history even if some events we don't like but you can't scape as some of our to  friends are trying. Idress sahab is my senior and i don't even mind some of his expressions in his latest comment. I have learnt a lot from him in my journalistic career and he knows me and my family well that like any human being i can make mistake but i don't lie.

I have already given them historic pics will do the rest but I wish people particularly younger generation should have come to functions held in the honor of four in khi lhr and isd and recorded the history. Respected Mazhar Sahab. thanks for considering and appreciating my
suggestion. Hope we shall be able to see the record online very soon.
Nowadays, it's an era of internet and people want to have e-books. so
please focus on this side. Truly speaking, people don't have enough
budget to buy books. So make efforts to provide younger generation all
record available on the internet. I agree that young journalists must
attend all important functions organized by community.
