The article in question was published in the Urdu daily Express as an op-ed piece on Sunday under the title "Jolie Ka Thhappar" [Jolie's Slap in the Face], and has rightly caused an uproar among most of those people who read it. Not because of the thrust of its main point, which was criticism of the government's alleged insensitivity to the plight of the flood affected - based on media reports of an allegedly leaked confidential report by UNHCR's goodwill ambassador Angelina Jolie to the organization after her visit to Pakistan - but in how he viciously maligned Angelina Jolie's character to build his case.

In essence, Hussain went on a diatribe against Jolie's personal life, her "immoral" lifestyle, her allegedly selfish and cut-throat nature, her alleged hypocrisy and manipulation in adopting children and even her "plain" looks - most of his 'facts' are in fact made up or sensationalized - only to build the case, right at the end, that even an 'immoral and wayward woman' like Jolie was deserving of more respect than the government since she at least criticized it for its peripheral preoccupations during the flood crisis. If you think that is a rather convoluted way of attacking the government, you would be dead right.

What Hussain has actually shown up with his words is his own sexism, his own bigotry, his own racism (he actually derides Jolie's children as "rang barangay yateem bachay" or 'multi-coloured orphan kids'), his own homophobia and his own amazingly parochial nature. He has conclusively proved, if it needed to be proved, that the paet ki daarrhi (beard in the stomach i.e. concealed bigotry) has a way of coming out at some point or the other. He has also shown how some hypocrites in the media write in one style for the Urdu-reading public and maintain quite a different persona for the English readership (perhaps he thought those who read English papers would never actually read his column in Urdu).

But you could not possibly understand why I say all of this without reading the article itself. For those who cannot read the purple prose in the original Urdu, here is my translation of it which tries to remain as true as possible to Hussain's style and meaning:

Jolie’s Slap in the Face

By Syed Talat Hussain

"Hollywood superstar Angelina Jolie’s life is a tortuous and colourful tale. This 36-year-old woman has suffered all those misfortunes about which her fans (I am not one of them) are all praise [sic] and which some of them enjoy thinking about. At a very tender age, she had adopted many of the habits of adulthood because father and mother could not bear living together and so this little girl and her brother were forced to live outside a family structure, with her mother. Madam hated traditions right from the start and thus constantly ran away from home to try and live life on her own terms. Finally, bidding farewell to even these broken relationships, she began working in the theatre (In America, theatre and prostitution are two different professions, readers are advised not to draw the wrong conclusions based on Pakistan’s example).

Because her looks were average, she couldn’t make much of a mark in acting. If one takes a look at Angelina Jolie’s photographs from that time, her face wouldn’t even invite a second glance: hollow cheeks, triangular nose, big startled-looking eyes and lips like an uncovered clay pot, no glow on her face nor the vitality of youth in her body. This is why, in order to advance her film career, she relied on marriages. She established relationships with well known filmmakers and thus inducted herself in the race for big budget films. Then with unflagging energy she worked hard to convert those opportunities into making a name for herself that is the envy of every good actress.

Angelina’s personal life is full of going against all those values that in every society lay the foundations of distinguishing good from bad. She is famously known as someone who can cross any limits to achieve her objectives. Her critics bestow titles such as “Sorceress” and “Queen of Hell” on her. In circles close to her it is said that, were murder not punishable by life in prison, Angelina Jolie would quite happily kill with her own hands any woman or man who came in her way, because softness is not part of her character.

According to some reports, the lady treats substance addiction like a profession and every year experiments with new substances to regularly nurture this disease. Besides her ambition for climbing the ladder of success, she also enjoys loving women (what you understand from this is right!). According to a recent newspaper report, Angelina Jolie calls herself the mistress of Sapphic love and considers these despicable experiences among the best of her life. According to her, only a woman can really understand the delicate emotions of another woman. Men, despite all their attempts, can never achieve the standard that is the apogee of women’s real desires.

Angelina Jolie has also made provisions to deflect attention away from these dark aspects of her life. That is why she has adopted multi-coloured orphaned kids to project herself as the goddess of motherly warmth and empathy. Her expert public relations machine has presented these aspects of her in such an effective way that the United Nations appointed this Hollywood actress as a goodwill ambassador. What special education or skills Angelina possesses to be appointed to this position, we do not know. Up until now, her biography does not reveal any period in which she shows herself to be proving her mastery of international affairs. In a life studded with addiction and intoxication and moral waywardness, if there is any glittering star, it is her efforts in the profession of film. Other than that, this lady does not live up to any standards and then Eastern standards are far higher than her character demonstrates.

If you have any doubt about this claim, open up the Constitution of Pakistan. Take out Articles 62 and 63. What do they say? Does it not say this: We who consider ourselves the flag-bearers of Eastern traditions, will consider those the best amongst us, who in addition to achieving excellence in other affairs, “possess a good character, do not go against the laws of Islam, do not commit great sins, are pious, and not involved in moral turpitude” etc. etc.? Our concept of piety is rooted in the assumption that those people who do not possess these traits in their personal life cannot have a position of respect in society. Be it in everyday life or matters of state, characters like Angelina Jolie, be they Muslim or non-Muslim, should remain deprived of respect. Indeed, had Angelina Jolie admitted to her shenanigans while living in Pakistan, she would have been stoned to death many times over.

But even this filmic woman drowning in her Westernisms has enough of a glimmer of values remaining in her to understand that pushing and shoving distressed flood affected people because of [official] protocol is a bad thing. In her report to the UN upon her return back from Pakistan, Angelina Jolie has expressed surprise that, at a time when 10 million people are restless with hunger, she was feted like royalty in the Prime Minister House. The prime minister’s family traveled in a special plane to come and meet her and give her gifts. This report is such a slap on the face that, if a person’s blood is not already cold, the redness of his cheeks would be visible to the entire nation. I don’t know why, after this report of her experiences in Pakistan, this Hollywood actress seems more worthy of respect than her prominent hosts. And I wonder if the hosts have learnt any lessons from this actress’ morals."

Just to set the record straight about Jolie:

1. She has been married twice, to actors Johnny Lee Miller and Billy Bob Thornton, neither of whom fall in the category of people who could give her a leg up in big budget films (in fact, how many people even know who Miller is?). She currently lives with actor Brad Pitt, whom she met long after she had become famous, and she has publicly said that she does not want to marry again until gay people also have the same right.

2. She has won one Oscar for Best Supporting Actress, two Screen Actors Guild awards and three Golden Globe awards, hardly someone you would classify as a non-serious actor who only got to stardom by sleeping her way through. In fact, there is no evidence (documented or gossiped about) of relationships with any directors or producers.

3. Where Hussain picked up his quotes about Jolie's intensely ambitious nature is a complete mystery (maybe Hussain spends his time reading The National Enquirer or has a yen for Brad Pitt's ex, Jennifer Aniston). In fact, Jolie has often expressed a desire to quit acting altogether to spend more time with her family.

4. She has never been accused, to my knowledge, of substance addiction, though she has admitted experimenting with drugs in her teenage years and has openly talked about her rebellious phase during adolescence.

5. The post of Goodwill Ambassador at the UN is predicated only on celebrities who wish to use their fame to advocate for causes the UN agencies wish to bring attention to. It has nothing to do with being experts in international relations. Jolie was appointed Goodwill Ambassador by the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR) because she is a famous actress, not because of the children she adopted.

Contrary to the sensationalist claptrap that this article peddles about Jolie, this is what we DO learn without doubt about Syed Talat Hussain from this article:

1. He believes all divorced or single parent families are unnatural and it is impossible to grow up happy or well-adjusted in them.

2. He hates people who hate traditions, no matter how stifling, and rebel against them.

3. He thinks all theatre actors in Pakistan are prostitutes. Actresses and perhaps all showbiz people are not worthy of any respect.

4. He enjoys making fun of people's looks, even if they are adolescent children.

5. He thinks that anyone who rebels against society's norms is destroying the good in society. Anyone who advocates equal rights for people based not on their gender, race or sexual orientation - as Jolie does - is the scum of the earth.

6. He has no problem making **** up to justify his claims.

7. He really, and I mean REALLY, hates gay people or even those who try and break down the barriers of discrimination against them through their words. He thinks of homosexuality as moral turpitude and despicable.

8. He can't imagine how any woman might find more fulfillment from another woman than a virile man.

9. He mocks children.

10. He has deep-rooted racial prejudices.

11. He thinks adoption is unnatural and is done out of pity by people as a public relations exercise.

12. He thinks everyone in the UN is a moron who gets fooled easily by PR machines.

13. He is xenophobic and thinks there is a clear line between Western and "superior" Eastern values. He also believes the West is irretrievably morally "corrupt" as evidenced by the 'looseness' of its women.

14. He thinks Article 62 and 63 of the Pakistan Constitution - inserted by the hypocritical dictator General Ziaul Haq to manipulate the parliament - are the epitome of Eastern values.

15. He thinks stoning people to death for their personal lifestyle choices or expression of opinion is acceptable.

16. He thinks it is okay to throw mud on someone's personal life to titillate readers as long as you are just marshalling your sleaze to make an unconnected point. Even if that person is completely unknown to you and has only gone out of their way to garner sympathy for the same people you claim to be fighting for.

Most people probably do not remember the fact that this cretin of a pseudo-intellectual was often himself accused (unfairly in my opinion), in the early part of his journalistic career, of being an empty-headed boy-toy for his female boss. They also probably do not remember the vile homophobic rant he once wrote (about 10 years or so ago) as an op-ed in The News, which is no longer available in the archives on the net (if anyone can find it, please do send it along to us). But we do, even if Hussain has tried to erase this past with a carefully cultivated image of sensibility and balance. Most, however, might recall that he is as fond of invoking the bogey of "liberal extremist", to label anyone who argues for secularism or progressive politics or offers dissent against antiquated societal norms, as people like Shireen Mazari, Ahmad Quraishi, Ansar Abbasi and Hamid Mir (great club you have there Talat). Someone should ask him to actually define what a "liberal extremist" is and how many of them actually exist in this country for them to be constantly used to scare people. We might learn some more about him.

There has also been a lot of speculation about where the well-spring of this anger and bitterness against Jolie actually arises from. Personally, I think Jolie probably ignored LittleMullahBoy on her trip to Pakistan, something his narcissistic ego just could not take.

But whatever the reason, we know now what the Express' idea of editorial decency is, and we also know another thing for sure: the Dawn Media Group really should reconsider long and hard about who it is taking on. Does Syed Talat Hussain really represent the values Dawn claims to uphold?

Dear all,

actually the the narration of the facts about AJ was needed to awake the rulers that a lady with such kind of character is also observed that her reception from Prime Minister is not a decent step in the condition in which more the 10 million Pakistanis were facing a huge disaster.

So please be positive, Talat Hussain is a pure patriotic journalist. every body should respect him.

Talat Sahib is a respected journalist and TV anchor beyond doubt but the point is was it necessary to discuss anyone's private or personal life or childhood. Its not only Hollywood but filmdom of any country even of Muslim states is not the place to quote or discuss moral standards.

Let me first of all say thanks to Mr Jawad for translating Talat's urdu column into English as I could not read the Urdu version. This reflects the high morale standards he owns by providing us all an opportunity to go through the original article before making any statement about it.
I would make no comment about Talat's article as I have high regards for him once he travelled for the cause of besieged Palestinians risking his life to terrorist Zoinist forces.
He is a good professional and a unique analyst. People have the right to have difference of opinion vis-a-vis his opinion but one has to respect both.
As far as Jawad's defence of Julie is concerned, I was shocked to read the conclusion drawn by Mr Jawad about personal beliefs of Talat.

I would like to put some queries for Mr Jawad which he had referred to TH.

1. Jawad says that TH really, REALLY, hates gay people or even those who try and break down the barriers of discrimination against them through their words. He thinks of homosexuality as moral turpitude and despicable.
Mr Jawad .. Do you love gays or homosexual people?

2. TH can't imagine how any woman might find more fulfillment from another woman than a virile man. Can you imagine so?

3. TH thinks it is okay to throw mud on someone's personal life to titillate readers as long as you are just marshalling your sleaze to make an unconnected point. But you also did the same to question TH's personal beliefs - is this not mudslinging?

I don't know for how many years you are settled in the US. However I hear that those who live abroad have more respect for their religion, values and traditions. However your write up reflects that you are ashamed of your values, religion and beliefs.

By the way, when you used the word "WE" most of the time saying that "we have record of TH's article published in The News", to whom you were referring to...? Your institution, those who have hired your services or your American culture?
We live in Pakistan and are proud Muslims. Whatever the west says about Islam, still it is the most moderate and revered religion though we are not good muslims.

Hope you would come up with good answers.

Profound regards

Talat's was an OPINION piece but unlike mot opinionated op-ed columnists his
opinions was based on facts. FACTS ARE FACTS even if these happened to be about
a celebrity lady. Rather than being cross with the messenger, the disappointed
admirers of Angelina need appreciate the message itself that nicely touch upon
the neo-con hobby of preaching civilisation to the savage natives, the Pakis, of
course!

Talat's article is baffling. First, I fail to understand why he would spend his time maligning someone becuase of the way they looked, the choices she made in life or what her morals are? Her only interaction with Pakistan has been that she has come her on more than one occasion to genuinely help. Did Talat write this piece on her to put her off and disgust her to the extent that she never returns again?.Her personal life is her personal life. Who has given us the right to be so judgemental of others? What point is a Pakistani journalist trying to prove by judging her morals or way of life. Who is he to question someone's intetion for adopting children??? That was low. Has Talat not often preached  on his tv shows that  we Pakistanis should stop slinging mud on others, stop making value judgments on others, show tolerance and acceptance and focus on our own moral weaknesses?
Its shocking how easily people slip from their moral highground and expose themselves sooner or later. His article reeks of prejudices, social phobias, narrow mindedness and petty, cheap journalism.

This article by Talat Hussain goes to reconfirm to sad realities about Pakistanis:

1. Our journalists think that just becuase they write and people read, it becomes their unquestionable right to throw mud on and malign whoever they wish, whenever they wish. Journalists have started acting as if they are a superior being and the regular standards of work ethics do not apply to them.

2. Sadly, we Pakistanis are as pompous and judgemental as ever! No amount of education, no amount of exposure to other cultures, no amount of intellectual interaction has been able to even create a dent in this horrible trait of ours. As falwed as we are, we should not be having the audacity to make value judgements on other.

Expected better from you Talat.

Regards,
Alizeh Haider.

Dear readers I wish somebody who know Talat could also write about him
the way he wrote about the film actress. I personally admire the lady
for visiting Pakistan in a time when our own leaders were shying away
from visiting the flood-hit areas. Secondly, we should admire her for
mentioning in her report something about our leaders, which otherwise
would not have known to us. If the high ups do not agree with the
report they can issue clarification. Since no clarification, it means
the report was right. So thanks to Angelena.

My dear colleagues and non-media subscribers of this forum,

What if Talat wrote something harsh about Ms. Jolie? Are these not facts? The US media regularly highlights the personal lives of its celebrities. Admirers of Julie have never lodged complaints with the US electrnoic and print media. Have they?
Why has Talat's article hurt our people? Is he factually wrong?
In case he is, its a sin for a writer.

But he will surely not be because Angeline Jolie's childhood history and miseries can only be know by researching about her.
My research tells Talat and Jolie have never been class-fellows or neighbours. So, how about suing the US media if it has projected Jolie this way, for our journalists to read and then quote.

Showbiz personalities are bound to attract such criticism. Had Talat aired such remarks about US Speaker Nancy Pelosi, I might have objected as to what was the need of criticising her face cuts and looks. It is not a pre-requisite for a legislator to be pretty.
See, actresses anywhere in the world would digest such remarks pretty easily. In fact they are used to it.
By the way, the more you discuss an actress, the more her fan-base and market grow.
Indirectly, Talat has done a favour to Julie. ( I am not good at casting pun or humour though).

By the way, I presume there are quite a few people who have actually been nourishing grudges against the learned journalist. So, possibly they were desperately on the look-out for something against Talat. Somebody even dubbed him a QADYANI the other day.
The admirers of Julie were mum then!! Why?

Change your gender, Talat Hussain------------and you will win many more advocates.
No dearth of them on this forum at least. It has pained me to hear such things.
Forgive me if I have hurt anyone. It was just a thought. I don't have the nerves and guts to reply back if any one of Talat's foes lash back at me for writing this post. I and Talat have never met or spoken in the past. In fact, I have never seen him in real life.

May I request you to respect my personal opinion?

While everyone is free to express their opinion, it does matter where one does so, if it is within confines of some walls, with family or friends it is one thing. But when you publicly express your opinion and you are so to say a public figure also, then it is open to other people/ audience commenting on it. Talat choose to defame a person who is a goodwill ambassador and has been at our side in times of our national distress. She has donated her own money, which in turn encouraged others to follow suit also. Angelina Jolie is in these troubled times emerged as a true friend of ours and this is no way to treat someone who has done some good for our people in pain and extreme distress. Whom our majority of media groups seems to have put on the back burner as if the flood never came, for it does not make revenue for them and also does not sell like the stuff they broadcast or peddle.

Talat Hussain like quite a few others slightly right off center hacks has chosen to be a populist and try to emerge as some kind of great hero ala the failed flotilla episode, whom everyone did know would fail, but he choose to go, so as to make a big news splash. In this age of info wars, these are cheap ways to gain popularity and promote commercial interests of sponsors (in this case news channels). It was what can be called a FOXy move. Now by choosing to speak against AJ he has found another way to promote himself, look at the attention at this forum alone. As if this is a big issue...

Shame on TH and all his supporters here, for AJ can be worse person on the planet but has contributed more then all of you and most of all right wing populist posturer's. She does need more attention, in fact on her visits here, she choose to stay away from the media and just did what she came for,but our leadership each time behaved in a manner which is best left undiscussed here, for that is another debate.

You forgot to write one thing, that 20 people were killed and many injured on freedom  flotilla.... Like Mr Shahid, i am not a foreteller, so i could not figure out that the attempt would be failed , therefore let's get a news splash. Wallah, Mr Shahid, if u r that Shahid Malik who used to work for BBC in Lahore, then i am very sorry to say, that we journalists have no regard for a daring and noble attempt, taken by one of our colleagues. i wonder, how could u say that Talat had made that so-called failed attempt to make headlines??? Did he know that the Israeli soldiers would spare him and his cameraman, and would killed and injured others only? If he knew that, then my my salute to Talat, and i am his "mureed" now.

Talat, leave this profession, and be a Pir Sahib, as u are already  a "Shah Sahib", and have totally mesmerized me, Shahid and many others by knowing much earlier that Israeli crisaders would never hurt you.

So Shahid sahib, why dont u make such any attempt too? i promise i wont call it a foxy tactic.

As far as Julie is concerned, Talat could be little harsh, but he hasnt written anything untrue. Julie is very much infamous for that. What Talat has written, has already been published in many Us papers. but still, if Shahid Sahib and others have objection on the language of the article, i respect their opinion, and we can talk about that.
but pls pls pls, i request u all, dont hurl such kind of allegations on our own colleagues, just because he has excelled and surpassed us.

cheers

I am astonished at the comments of the people, what the wrong has
Talat has written. If he has written something about Julie, even a
single word is not wrong, if it is can anybody proof. If somebody have
time then he/she must study the life of Julie, everything would be
clear to him.
well done Talat you r good
dont worry about stupid comments

It really is ironic that how easy it is to drag anything into another tangent. 20 people were needlessly killed on the failure writ flotilla. Thanks Allah Al Mighty not all were killed, yet 20 people lost their lives trying to enter into an area which is occupied by those who do not care two hoots about what anyone may want to call it, they acted in their occupied land, which they call their own. Wonder what would have happened if a freedom caravan would have been sent to occupied Kashmir, where the Kashmiri people are living in the world largest siege. Or if Americans or Western people were to try such an attempt in a taliban controlled area. They would all surely be dead.

Such silly gimmicks do not work, they are doomed to disaster, but then their are people who always take part in such things, like smokers, drinkers and so many addicts, all know it is bad, but they still do it. Talat was on that Flotilla doing what, covering it for his channel, or was he their on his own volition and expense.

Either ways that is not the issue here. What is the issue is why is it okay to foul mouth some one who has done good for our people. What is the point in throwing dirt on someone, even though she or he maybe the worst of the lot. AJ came here as a UN good will ambassador, did some great work, gave from her own pocket and left. Now hacks like TH can go on and on about how bad, immoral, shameless, show off or non-Eastern she is and that what is the lesson it for our rulers, but it serves no purpose to publish dirt on someone, especially when they are doing something for our helpless and still in great distress people.

I have never been employed or commisioned by BBC, please do your home work on people before making wild insinuations. I am very happy that TH came back alive and in one piece, thanks to the Americans, whom our Government requested and they got them freed or else he might have had to suffer like the others left behind, wonder why he did not stay back till all were freed....

What Talat has written, has already been published in many Us papers. but still, if Shahid Sahib and others have objection on the language of the article, i respect their opinion, and we can talk about that.
but pls pls pls, i request u all, dont hurl such kind of allegations on our own colleagues, just because he has excelled and surpassed us.

cheers

I agree that Mr. Talat Hussain is a good journalist but still I am fail to comprehend who has endorsed a man to judge another human being. This right only belongs to Allah Almighty to decide who is right or wrong. What the best we can do judge, control and get the righteous way for ourselves rather than pointing out somebody.

Welldone, Talat Hussain

TH's means, though Angelina Jolie has weak character but despite of that she felt bad rich arrangements of meal at Prime Minister house while county faces devastating flood.

Though, Angelina Jolie’s life is a tortuous and colourful tale but her humanitarian feelings are better than our rulers.

Very good Talat Hussain, wish you good luck.

best regards,

---------- Forwarded message ----------

Is this silly debate still of interest to all our journalist fraternity? Is there no other news ? Please colleagues find another newsworthy topic to discuss. Leave Ms Julie read Jolie alone and give TH a break. Joining Yawn News Tv is enough of a career suicide for our gifted friend Mr Talat Hussain.

Talat Hussain’s slap in the face

by Aatekah Mir-Khan

A senior sub-editor for the Lahore city pages of The Express Tribune

“My husband is an addict. He doesn’t work to support the family. He does menial work on days of his choosing, the money from which goes to feeding his addiction. I work to feed and support our children. But he has told me that he does not want me to work long hours at somebody’s house. I can only stay out until the afternoon. It is a matter of ‘honour’,” was how a maid described her husband to another.

“Thank God, my husband does not do drugs. He doesn’t work, he screams at me and sometimes beats me up but I am grateful that he is not on drugs,” said the latter to the former. Makes one feel embarrassed at the blessings people are capable of counting, no?

The story is not an exception. Many of the women who work at people’s houses do so because their husbands are the worst kind of ‘stay-at-home’ spouses.

I kept wondering for a few days after the exchange related above where the ‘honour’ of men begins and where it ends. It is ‘honourable’ to beat up your wife and tell her that she cannot go out of the home after dark but it does not affect a man’s ‘honour’ that his wife’s putting food on the table and working two, three jobs to make sure their children get a minimum education while he stays at home, not helping with the kids? I don’t think there is anything wrong with women working or earning more than their husbands. The line that gets a little blurry is the definition of ‘honour’ that these men have. I attributed their ignorance to their lack of education and the social strata they belong to. But then came the ‘slap in the face’.

Talat Hussain, a man who has (or should I say had) a reputation for being quite bearable among the insufferable lot of TV anchors, wrote a column “Jolie ka Thappar” in an Urdu newspaper about Angelina Jolie’s trip to Pakistan and the report that she is said to have submitted to the UN. Read it once and you won’t believe what your eyes are reading, let it settle in and you will feel disgusted. While you are reading, you will ask yourself many times, “Where is all this repugnance leading to?” you get your answer in the last few sentences. Hussain takes Ms Jolie apart only to prove one point: someone as ‘low’ in character could look right through the government’s crap post floods.

Irrespective of your sex, everything in your body will scream “sexist, racist, judgemental” to name a few reactions. Not only does Hussain take the liberty of commenting on how Ms Jolie looked at a certain age, he also has the audacity to continually pass judgement on her, talking about her ‘colourful life’, her sexual proclivities and ‘myriad broken relationships’.

“Mercy is not one of her qualities,” Hussain opines. Excuse me, sir, but it doesn’t seem to be one of yours. Most pitiful perhaps is the sentence, “To remove attention from her dark episodes, Angelina Jolie has adopted multi-coloured children to mould herself into the paragon of mercy and maternal instincts.”

Hussain’s writing seems to suggest that we really are the ‘pure’ people and that other people do not measure up.

“This woman does not pass any test of Eastern values. Take a look at Article 62 and 63 of the Pakistani constitution. We put great value on good behaviour, following Islamic traditions… If Angelina Jolie had spoken of her deeds as a Pakistani she would have been stoned to death infinite times.”

He hammers the last nail in the coffin saying:

“People like Angelina Jolie, whether they be Muslim or non-Muslim, should be given no honour at all.” I do not know who died and made Hussain the queen.

Don’t dismiss him please. He does show some compassion, “How is it possible that this actress seems worth honouring more than her Pakistani hosts?”, he asks. It is possible very easily sir. ‘This actress’ has a lot more spine and is capable of showing mercy than you. She does not think that she has the right to be a moralist and she does not stick her ‘ugly nose’ (as you put it) where it does not belong.

I am not the first one to say it but it seems that Hussain’s column was him talking to the audience of Urdu newspapers. “She is willing to exceed any limits to get what she wants” writes Hussain. It seems so do you, Mr Hussain. You wrote what you wrote because you thought this is what would sell to a particular audience. But that is not a justification. Where are the ethics that you keep on harping about? Where’s that liberalism that you keep rubbing into other people’s faces who appear on your show? Where’s that ‘down with sensationalism’ that you keep reprimanding some channels and newspapers for?

The column highlights the discrepancy between Urdu and English journalism in the country. In addition, it makes sure that the reality bites you, right in the face. In our country, when men decide what is honourable and what’s not, it has nothing to do with their class or education.
