First public payoff for Hamid Mir's change of heart has come in the
form of Zardari sanctioning a rare interview to him.

Previously, a similar interview with Osama bin Laden (courtesy of HM's
click) propelled till then the largely unknown Hamid Mir into fame,
wealth and power.

Share

Mr Karim Ayaz

I don't mean no disrespect, but gross generalizations and pathetically fallacious reflex arguments in your post don't only make your post unconformable, but also boring.
Statements like, "Viewers are Smart & Wise ", and, " Ratings Gauge Perfectly", reflects the desperate attempt at substantiating your assertion , when everyone knows that a prog airing nude mathiraa would get more rating than hajj. transmission. I believe its about time, the culture of compulsive assertions backed with flawed arguments ends among our journalist ranks.
Hamid Mir, has been the only person among these prime time conjurers, who has tried keeping least lean nd more perspective to his airtime.
It would have been encouraging and pleasant to have seen something more objective being criticized or discussed about the interview, instead of a lame grope at the anchor's ratings.

Why such a cynical behavior towards Hamid Mir???? I think if anyone given such an opportunity would jump right at it. Don't undermine the fact that HM is a journalist n if he landed the interview of the most controversial man in Pakistan today then hats off to him. Why doubt his intentions first let the interview air n then b the judge as to what role HM is playing at the presidency with the DON (jis ki talash Duniya ki 12 or was it 13 mumalik ki police ko hai)

Jafri Sahib,

I couldn't help but chuckling over the inherent contradiction of your own argument, "... the culture of compulsive assertions backed with flawed arguments ends among our journalist ranks." Isn't that what you did by berating Ayaz Sahib?

p.s. ever paid attention to Hamid Mir's impulsive presentation of hearsay/opinion as facts?

I agree with Ejaz Ahmed that journalists must have friendly relations with Politicians. I have seen many journalists using abusive language towards Politicians and parliamentarians during press conferences which is unfair at all. There r groups within media somebody is pro Military somebody is pro PPP somebody pro PML, PTI, JI, JUI, MQM,ANP etc. journalists belonging to these groups use abusive language n harsh words through their writings and TV programmes against politicians n parties who r in opposite camps aimed at pleasing their real masters and for that journalists are heavily paid by these parties and establishment as well. I think HM interview AZ was balanced one.

Hamid did a great journalistic work and one should appreciate that he was the first to interview him. The interview was the headline of all tv channels and newspapers, topic of many talk shows, picked up by international media. As a journalist i believe its big scoop. Congratulation Hamid.

Yes Hamid Mir deserve admiration for this prepared answers interview of President Zardari. The way it was telecasted shows that questions were given an advance and even documentories were displaced. Anyways he was pretty confidence in asking questions and President was also replying with full confidence. Let the common people give their independent opinion and not the journalist with vested interests who praise each other.

Thanks

Abbas Sahib,

Thank you for making the point, Mir's interview was a "big scoop"; a well deserved reward for HM's change of heart. So who's next in line to sell his/her soul for a prime time interview with the champion of Democracy (read Autocracy)?

"Good Friendly Relations" with "People at the Helm" sounds like journalist. I thought investigative reporting ,sharp questions and public views are journalist norms. sorry if I hurt anyone feeling but Hamid Mir should not waste Geo time or its viewers. President have whole PTv with far more budget and 0 viewer-ship. You are a journalist ask yourself  when Pakistan is facing so many crises and the man head of the state and head of the ruling party would be ask such nice questions. Is it journalism or propaganda?

Journalists should have all the relations with anyone they desire, but the problem arises if or when their relationship cloud their work, which should be based on truth and unbiased. In case of Hamid Mir, his recent change of heart for Zardari and company is hard to ignore. Hence, his bias creates a plausible conflict of interest. Unless, HM explains what triggered his deep admiration for Zardari and his unsubstantiated rants/accusations against the security agencies, he will have a huge question mark hanging over his head!

I fully agree with Mazhar. Access to the information is a journalists' bread and butter, and Hamid has that access. He has worked very hard as a reporter. And now he has reached this point in life where he has contacts and he is smart to know when, where and how to use those contacts.

Majority of the independent analysts declared that Hamid Mir did a great job by asking all the important questions to the head of state who is not in a good state of affairs.Hamid Mir exposed the real thinking of Zardari against judiciary. He played his old statements in front of him.It was a new tradition that President was embarrased in President House.

I liked this interview as a young journalist and learned a lot that how to interview a very difficult person like Zardari. The professional stature of Hamid Mir further increased after this interview because he gave us evidence that President of Pakistan is unaware of the ground realities.Yes some old enemies of Hamid Mir are trying their level best to make accusations on Hamid Mir without evidence.Today Ahmad Noorani wrote a long article against Hamid Mir in The News while Dawn,Daily Times and Express praised this scoop. Some of my senior colleagues said that real author of Ahmad Noorani story is Shaheen Sehbai because there is no logic in it.Hamid Mir was doing an interview he was not having a debate with Zardari.

I think Zardari was a loser after this interview he gained nothing. When Hamid Mir interviewed Osama bin Laden after 9/11 same accusations were made on him.Shaheen Sehbai published a story in The News that FBI arrested Hamid Mir but actually Mir was taken into custody by ISI for investigation. Then same Hamid Mir interviewed Colin Powel,Tony Blair,Karzai,Musharraf,Benazir Bhutto,Nawaz Sharif,Imran Khan and Hillary Clinton recently. These people give interviews to him because of his stature. His critics should make some constructive and logical criticism on him with evidence.Everybody watched that Zardari was speechless many times during the interview because Mr.Mir was asking very hard and to the point questions. There was no evidence that it was a fixed interview.Zardari was looking uncomfortable. He was forced to drink water three times during the interview and even these shots were not edited.Weldone Hamid Mir.We are proud of you but unfortunately your own newspaper group launched a compaign against you. What can we do for you?I remember that when ISI tried to pressurised you by involving in the murder case of Khalid Khawaja it was Ansar Abbasi who endorsed the ISI accusations against you but nothing was proved against you.

Khan sahib,

I admire your defense of for Hamid Mir; as both of you claim to be victims of ISI, but I would have had more admiration for you had you also
asked Hamid, why he failed to raise most pertinent and relevant questions? For example, why didn't he ask Zardari about his mental instability,
Rather instability? Remember, Zardari's psychiatrists under oath testified to the British Courts that Zardari suffers from mental illnesses like
Dementia and bi-polar disorder? Therefore, Zardari should have never been elected to the presidency because he had been mentally disabled
and unqualified long before he was elected. Hence, he is a disqualified presidents who should have never been allowed to hold the office .

Next time, I hope you will ask the most basic and relevant questions to your mentor before rushing to praise him up and down. All Hamid
did was ask some questions that were appearently fed to Zardari team before hand and still Hamid had to help the struggling Zardari with the
questions.

Well done... Hamid Mir !
You have really done a great job. That is why you have become the headline of the media and of course the hero of the viewers (common people & political workers). Be sure that you have got as much honor as anyone can imagine. Nobody dare to interview such a brave person (Mard-e-Hur) in such a brave manner. No doubt it is first time in history that an anchor asked questions to a sitting President with a courage by showing him shots of his speeches and reminding him his sayings. This can happen only with a real democratic government. It is unbelievable. It is amazing. You have done a great journalistic work and everyone should appreciate you. No doubt, you have got your name written in the history with golden words and the nation will remember you as a brave journalist. Don't care for those who don't dare to take a risk or those who can't see beyond their size.
I extend my heartiest congratulation to you.
Best of luck.

There shouls be decency in asking questions and this is another journalistic norm, Hamid asked all critical questions in anice way that he should havew, even he asked a question about involvement of Rehman MAlik in BBs murder. As a journalist it was his scoop, as every journalist would like to interview a president like Zardari in the present circumstances. As far as intagrity of journalist is concerned they should have maintain it, but unfortunately many front line columnist in JAng works for either NAwaz Sharif, ZArdari or Imran Khan and also for agencies and they still claim themseloves as independent analyst.claim

The discussion here is more fascinating than Mir-Zardari chat. Some called it waste of time and some remarked it. Both are correct in their own planned thinking. A simple question, if it was a trash inter-view then why a debate over here on that trash? Another Mir is attacked since aligning with politicians or its all due to 'eik Zardari sub pe Bhari'. Mir-Zardari nexus raises many eyebrows.......

Mr
Rana this no way to challange integrity of journalists, it is the  media that raises questions on missdeeds of the governments and people like have vested interests not ther journalists.

Gill Sahib,

It's very simple, "access" at what price? Integrity, slacked standards, wealth or fame? Am I the only who sees a gratuitous conflict-of-interest in such explanations? Historically, politicians beg to be interviewed by respectable journalists and not the other way around.

It is actually the other way around. Sometimes a journalist of any stature has to beg an ordinary source for an interview. This is standard formula in journalism. His/her primary concern is to fetch as much info as possible, come what may.

Please avoid generalization if you are talking about strategic interviews. Even  if a politician - in case of stratigic interview -  wants to be interviewed, why should a journalist avoid the scoop,  he/she may get?

Rana Sahib,

In case you missed the context, it's about establishing 'relationships' with politicians, which means: a trade off. Please tell us your statement, "come what may" doesn't indicate your willingness to abandon of any or all ethical standards.

Please cite an example of my 'generalization' of 'strategic interview', because I have no idea what strategic interviews are? Thanks.

Adnan
