Hi All,
Last weekend was full of fun and joy.
We had some new Kids / Volunteers joining in Prarambh.
New Face at Prarambh:
This time we had one new volunteer.
[Neha Jain]: She is been working with Infosys, Pune for last 3 years.
She is a part of Sparsh_HJW_Foundation (Snehankit) since last 1 year
and came to know about Prarambh, first through Infy_HJW_Foundations
and then via a friend while looking towards joining some other NGO as
volunteer work reduced at Snehankit.
In her own words: -” I learnt how to teach kids at a slow disciplined
pace (for I was excited to teach them everything in a day). It’s more
learning for me than for the kids I guess . My first day at Prarambh
was quite well, for I never felt like a first timer.”
Below are the activities performed by different volunteers, last
weekend.
Saturday: July 25, 2009
[LEVEL 1]
• [Aparna]:
[Khushi]: I taught Khushi numbers from 1 to 10 to write and pronounce
in English.
• [Ankit]:
[Anil and Sunil]: I taught them how to write small alphabets from h to
l, I asked them to write the same, 20 times each and memorize.
[LEVEL 2]
• [Aparna]:
[Nikita Thosar, Nikita Kamble, Neha, Muskan and Kavita]: I taught them
tables up to 10. Most of them already knew the tables so I made them
memorize it and then took a test. Made them learn the names of months
and their spellings.
• [Nibhatish]:
[Nilesh]: I taught him Math. I taught him simple multiplications,
multiplying 2 digit no. by 1 digit no. He was doing mistakes at the
start but later on he was able to do it.
[Azhar]: I taught him simple division as he already knew
multiplications of 2, 3 digit numbers. He was able to solve divisions
when there was no reminder but in case of reminders, he was not able
to solve it correctly. I told him with various examples and at last he
was able to solve one problem correctly.
[Shubham]: I asked him to do simple additions and then additions with
carry. He was able to solve those examples.
[Mahesh]: He knew simple multiplications but was doing some mistakes
while solving problems. So I explained those errors to him and gave
him 10-15 problems to solve. Then, he was able to solve it
correctly.
[LEVEL 3]
• [Ankit]:
[Madhuri, Sangita, Mamta and Sumitra]: I first asked them to write few
numbers in words like 987654. They did some mistakes in spellings
which I corrected. After this I taught them the concept of BODMAS and
gave them few problem to solve, the first one they did wrong, after I
explained the concept again they did rest of the problems correctly.
[LEVEL 4]
• [Ashish]:
[Kajal, Rahil, Aishwarya, Ganesh (L3) and Nikita (L2)]: I taught them
words, ending with ‘_at’ and ‘_ap’ words, with examples.
Sunday: July 26, 2009
[LEVEL 1]
• [Hetuk]:
[Kanchan]: Since she was confused between the small letters ‘f’
and‘t’, we practiced the writing and pronunciation of same letters for
some time. Then I taught her how to get familiar with sounds of
different letters. And in last 15 minutes, I taught her numbers from
11 to 20, how to write and spell.
• [Ankit]:
[Babu and Rishikesh]: As they didn’t know English alphabets orally, so
I taught them to speak alphabets from A till l only.
• [Neha]:
[Anil and Sunil]: I taught them how to write small alphabets from i to
l. I observed that they are doing few mistakes in writing which I
corrected.
[LEVEL 2]
• [Prakhar]:
[Mangesh Shinde]: I taught him how to get familiar with sounds of
different letters. I gave him different words then I asked him to
recognize the first letter of that word with the help of the sound and
write in his copy.
• [Dev]:
[Sudhir]: We worked on alphabets first. Then on basic words. He is
good in math, but is not having enough interest for English. So trying
to go slow and make him like it.
• [Ankita]:
[Mangesh Kanse, Mangesh Chhorge, Muskaan, Nikita Thosar, Nikita Kamble
and Kavita]: I worked with them again on the difference of sound of A
and E. I taught them the difference using similar words like PEN and
PAN, SET and SAT etc by writing these words on the board and asking
them to read aloud. Then I dictated them some of these words. Nikita
and Muskaan have grasped a lot of it while the other kids are still
struggling with these sounds. So, need to work on this more in the
next class.
[LEVEL 3]
• [Payoshni]:
[Prateeksha, Ganesh and Shweta]: The 3 kids learnt about Weather and
Climatic conditions from the puzzle book we had. The kids were first
asked to brainstorm the weather changes in one year and then the
English names for them. We also learnt about clouds, rains, tornados
and they were asked to look at the picture and identify the name of
the weather. Similar exercise was done for shapes. The kids right now
know only the Marathi words for them; in next class, will teach them
the English for the same, with spellings.
• [Ramya]:
[Sangeeta, Mamta, Sumitra and Madhuri]: I gave them a test on the
words that I had introduced to them last week, from the first three
paragraphs of a story book called ‘Black Beauty’ by Anna Sewell. They
could remember a good number of words. I found Sumitra weak this time
too. The other girls were Ok.
[LEVEL 4]
• [Ashish]:
[Aishwarya, Kajal, Pooja and Nikita]: Completed with them the sounds
of alphabets followed by a small test of understanding.
