Hi All,
Last weekend was full of fun and joy.
We had some new Kids / Volunteers joining in Prarambh for the first
time.

New Face at Prarambh:
This time we had one new volunteer.

[Nisha Vishwasrao]: She is been working with Infosys for the past two
years and is a part of ESOR Department in Pfizer project.

Below are the activities performed by different volunteers, last
weekend.
Saturday: July 18, 2009
• [Ankit]:
[Mamta and Sumitra]: They came for the first time so I took a test to
decide their levels. After me, Ankita took her over.

[LEVEL 1]
• [Nibhatish]
[Babu]: He just knows how to write A, B, C and D. He does not know
entire alphabet series “A to Z”. So we revised entire series from A to
Z few times orally and showed him some of the alphabets with pictures
in the book.
[Sunil and Anil]: They know capital letters and often get most of the
alphabets correct. They knew some of the small letters so I taught
them other small letters and asked them to revise with the help of
book.
• [Ankit]:
[Khushi]: She knows “abcd” verbally but can’t write beyond F, also she
faces a lot of difficulty in recognizing the letters. I taught her
only letter ‘g’ by asking her to say g loud and clear each time she
was writing it.

[LEVEL 2]
• [Bhavna Sanse]
[Nikita, Muskaan, Azahar and Sudhir]: I took test on tables (Tables
from 5 -10). Nikita and Muskaan are a bit weak in it. I asked them to
learn the tables. Took the test again in random order, they couldn't
do it properly. After that I taught them some multiplication problems.

[LEVEL 3]
• [Dev]:
[Madhuri, Shweta and Anita]: We learned about wild, domestic animals,
their characteristics and examples.
• [Ankita]:
[Mamta, Sumitra, and Preeti (L2)]: I taught the new kids Mamta,
Sumitra, Preeti (she comes once in a while). Preeti was writing words
with alphabets. Mamta and Sumitra are quite sharp. They wrote Day
names, body parts (they know organs like intestine, brain and all) and
color names, fruits and animals. Then I taught them some rules for
singular-plural, which they picked up fast. After that I taught them
the difference in and the usage of in/on/under and how to answer a
question- “What is this?” At the end we played Name, Fruit (instead of
Place), Animal and Thing. I think we can put both the girls in level 3
and properly begin teaching them as per Level 3 syllabus. And if
Preeti comes she should be put to Level 2.
• [Nisha]:
[Ganesh]: I revised him all tables from 7 to 13. He wrote each table
for 2 times and now if asked he can answer easily.

[LEVEL 4]
• [Ashish]:
[Pooja, Kajal, Aishwarya and Deeksha]: Continuing with the plan from
last week I started with the sound of alphabets: a, b, c, d, e, f, g,
h, I. Then, I asked the kids to give a small dictation test with which
they identify only the 1st alphabets of the words like "
hallucination,' anonymous'. This way I tried scaffolding the process
of kids being able to write words by identifying their sounds.
• [Nisha]:
[Rahil and Pratiksha(L3)]: Revised time conversion. Now they can
easily convert hours to min and sec and also min to hours. I also
taught them the proper way to write down the steps while solving any
problem.

Sunday: July 19, 2009
[LEVEL 1]
• [Nibhatish]:
[Samadhan, Ajay and Khushi]: They all can say “A to Z” orally but
could not recognize all the letters, so we revised all the alphabets
2-3 times with the book and also by writing. I explained them
pronunciation of each alphabet and also asked them to write in Marathi
in their notebook how they will pronounce these alphabets. But all
these kids are quite young so they do not know how to write
pronunciation of alphabets like X, W, Q etc in Marathi also. So, I
asked them to remember these alphabets orally rather than writing.
• [Hetuk]:
[Sunil]: I taught Sunil to write Alphabets in capital and small
letters from ‘a to f’, he is confused between small b and d so took
most of the time to teach him the difference between ‘b’ and ‘d’.
[Anil]: I taught Anil to write Alphabets in capital and small letters
from ‘a to h’, he remembers all the letters but isn’t comfortable with
writing the same. So, most of the time, I was teaching him how to
write the letters perfectly.
[Babu]: I taught Anil to write Alphabets in capital and small letters
from ‘a’, he seems to be very slow, we need to pay special attention
to this boy.
• [Dev]:
[Shradha]: I taught her elementary additions without carry forward.
• [Prakhar]:
[Amruta]: I taught her capital alphabets from A to C.

[LEVEL 2]
• [Nisha]:
[Kavita]: I taught her division. She was having difficulties initially
so I asked her to note down table for 9 and taught her division only
by 9. She was able to do that but needs practice.
• [Ati]:
[Mangesh Shinde]: Revision of all small and capital letters. Then I
taught him numbers from 1 to 10, how to write and spell. I also taught
him some three letter rhyming words, how to pronounce and spell.
• [Dev]:
[Sudhir]: I taught him fractions, its meaning and additions.
• [Ankita]:
[Mangesh Kanse, Muskaan, Nikita, Priyanka and Dhananajay]: I revised
with them the sounds of vowels A, I and O, by asking them to spell and
write some 3-lettered words. Then, I began the sounds of vowels E and
U. Made them differentiate the sounds of A and E by making them all
speak words like PA, PE, ME, MA, etc and reading and writing some
words with these letters.

[LEVEL 3]
• [Ramya]:
[Sangeetha, Mamta, Sumitra and Madhuri]: I read them through the first
three paragraphs of a story book called ‘Black Beauty’ by Anna Sewell.
I introduced them to few words from that and made them get their
pronunciations, meanings, spellings and usage right. Then I made each
one of them read a line and explain the meaning. Mamta reads very
well. We need to work more on Sumitra. Sangeetha and Madhuri are good.
[LEVEL 4]
• [Ashish]:
[Pooja, Kajal, Aishwarya and Deeksha]: I continued with sounds of: j,
k, l, m, n. This time, as part of assessment, I asked the kids to
identify the first and last alphabet of tough words with the help of
identifying their sounds.
• [Nisha]:
[Ganesh (L3) and Rahil]: Revised “Action Verbs”. I made them write
about 15 sets of sentences for different “Action Verbs”.
