Hi All,
Below are the activities performed by different volunteers on 24th and
25th Oct.
Saturday: Oct 24, 2009
[LEVEL 2]
• [Dev]:
[Sudhir]: I taught him how to do subtraction, on which we did few
problems.
[LEVEL 3]
• [Ramya]:
[Nikita Kamble]: It had been long since we did Math together so I
decided to go ahead with that for the day. We started off with some
simple sums on addition and subtraction. She had trouble with borrow-
subtraction, I gave her the logic and she understood it well. Then we
did some multiplication sums. She said she was never taught division
before (maybe she wasn’t confident enough), so I went ahead with
teaching her that. We did some simple, 0 remainder single digit
divisor sums and we advanced as we proceeded. She learnt it quick and
was pretty good. She could not recollect multiplication tables on the
go and hence had to write them by the side to refer for her sums.
Sunday: Oct 25, 2009
[LEVEL 2]
• [Ankita]:
[Mangesh]: I first took his test on sounds of vowels but he is still
not very good at it. I wrote all the sounds for him and then asked him
just the vowels in the 3-lettered words I said. He needs to work hard
on it but he gets distracted very easily. Then I taught him Maths –
addition and subtraction of time (in Hrs, min and sec).
• [Dev]:
[Sudhir]: We did lot of mental maths today. Including additions,
subtractions, and multiplications. Later on, played memory game with
others.
[LEVEL 3]
• [Kiran]:
[Azhar]: I taught Azhar to write simple English sentences and meaning
of different English words used in day to day activities. Azhar can
write English words and read but he has difficulty in forming complete
sentences. I also made him write English sentences of his important
activities in a single day and have asked him to do the work of
writing all the important activities he does this week. I also taught
Azhar to do simple multiplication. He knows all the basic tables but
needs more practice in performing multiplication of larger numbers.
• [Ramya]:
[Nikita Kamble]: On Saturday she didn’t want to do Math initially, but
on Sunday she insisted that I give her more sums . I at first gave
her a sum to test what she gathered from Saturday’s class. She was
very confused and couldn’t proceed. So we did that sum together,
revising on the concepts learnt. I pointed out that it would be better
if she could mentally figure out the multiplication tables rather than
writing them down each time. So she tried and put it verbally. Later I
gave her a good number of sums all of which she solved very well. She
also can point out what the divisor, dividend, remainder and quotient
are. She was interested in taking some sums as homework and I have
given her that.
[Madhuri]: I continued with what was taught to her in the previous
class - unitary methods - sums that involved a division and a
multiplication. I gave some more sums on that to test her
understanding. We later did a few slightly complex sums on addition,
subtraction, multiplication and division. She is pretty strong with
her Math. As she insisted I should, I’ve given her a few sums for
homework.
[Sumitra]: I gave her sums on addition, subtraction and
multiplication. She had trouble with carry over addition if the digits
on the addends were zero. I told her the procedure. She occasionally
had confusion with borrow- subtraction too. I have given her some sums
as homework.
• [Kranti]:
[Ganesh]: I revised the adjectives taught on Saturday like cruel,
beautiful etc and asked Ganesh to form sentences with them. Then I
told him to write the names of 5 Fruits, 5 vegetables and 5 Animals.
Later we did some multiplication and Division problems. Ganesh wasn’t
too comfortable with Division, so I explained the method and gave him
simple 2 digit divisions.
