Hi,
Ankit and Me have been working on setting up the Voice reporting thing
in my effort to reach out to a larger(rural) audience of India as well
and today we did a test with it.

We have a number and did a voice call + pushing the audio/mp3 to the
site. It works. Now we are working on creating a report with the link
to the audio file/player that would be included on the report using
the Ushahidi API.

And if you would have noted on the website, I have added the SMS
number "Send an SMS with keyword "PWR" to 9717-403-111 followed by
location/type of powercut category/timing etc. (Service Sponsored by
One97 Communications.)"

as a reporting option.

Its public yet no announcements on the public forum because I am
waiting me to do a write up on the formats of SMS reports then will
announce it.

Just wanted to pass on the info:

I was also wonderingn to clear the backlog of reports/moderation Q
before making the announcement of SMS reporting which will increase
the load. Currently we have Twitter+WEb+mApp reports in moderation Q.

Can we set up a time/date to do a moderation hackathon or something?
:) an hour on any particular day and we can munch all the reports.

Do let me know. I am usually free after office hours unless I am
travelling. Can we do it this week/end? Do suggest.

I think we should have a moderation rota. Each volunteer should have moderation responsibility for 2 weeks. It's the volunteers choice on how frequent he/she moderates in those 2 weeks. If there is no objection, I'd request Ajay to create a rota & put it onto wiki.

That is a good idea, however most of us on this list are not all into
moderation. I have marked this mail as CC to all the volunteers that
we have had so far in case they are interested.

For now, I would really like to decide on a 1 hour hackathon style
moderation session where we all can do it all in one day, before the
public launch of SMS.

For people who signed up as volunteers and are not on the Google
Group: please do join http://groups.google.com/group/PowerCutsIN for
updates and participating.

Also moderator guideline document is available here: Under the "Ways
to Help" section on the wiki:
http://wiki.ictd.asia/Crowdsourcing_Power_Cuts_in_India#Ways_to_Help

Can we dedicate an hour on any of these days before or on weekends? Do
let me know :) We need to clear the moderation log as we go public
with SMS and Call reporting, we will have more reports.

Ji priya saathiyon, zara attachment par gaur farmaayein :o)

Dear Friends,
Please findn the attached screenshot - for Audio reports
So far Recording of Voice Call + Uploading MP3 to our webserver + Creating a SHORT URL of the file with a Web Mp3 player +
Creating a report in Ushahidi is working!

Thanks to Ankit Jain(VoiceTree)

And now, in the next days we will work on refining the whole thing before preparing for public/offline launch.

I am planning to not publicise the Audio thing online anywhere for now, and do a Print Media thing that could publish the number / procedure in regional papers.

Since our objective is to reach out to "Rural" and non-Internet mass.

If anyone has any ideas or leads on how to help with that kind of media outreach do ping me.

More soon!

I used to know someone in graamvaani the rural ham radio service. I'll see if I can revive that contact in case it helps.

You mean them right? http://gramvaani.org/
That'd be helpful.

I also did a "Hello World!" style audio report just for kicks. http://media.powercuts.in/a/index.php?file=1315423467.60694aa

Now to figure out a way/plugin to embed this Audio player right on the map/report..!

Word-of-mouth marketing ? We could collaborate with NGOs working in
the rural sector to get the word out to their respective clientele?

Best,
Bharathi

Yes. Thats my idea of reaching out to rural mass. NGOs working in rural areas - we can partner and do it.

Is there a place to know contacts in community radios? Radio messages will be most effective as a large population in rural areas listen to radio all day.
