Hi Neighbors!

I hope you will join me and our Westwood Park friends tomorrow, July 4, for the great annual community parade and event!  Please see the details below - and I hope to see you there!

If you haven't attended before, we meet on Fairwood near West at Frey Ct, and usually have a couple fire/rescue trucks join us (assuming they aren't needed for a service call).  Kids are on bikes, scooters, and riding in wagons.  Around 9:15 or so, we will start the walk/ride alongside the trucks to Shrevewood Elem, where usually the trucks hang for a bit, fire/EMS workers chat with the neighbors, and let everyone check out the trucks!  We will have water and watermelon at the school.

Hope you'll join us in your best red, white and blue, and encourage your kids to decorate their rides.  I know my son is pumped to decorate his scooter for the ride down Fairwood!

Subject: [WPCA] PLEASE COME! 4th of July Parade is still ON!!!
To: <westwoo...@googlegroups.com>

Hello Everyone,

We were sad to see that the 4th of July parade may not occur. Thank you to the original organizers, and we now have additional volunteers to help make it happen!! We hope to have a great neighborhood showing!!

The fire department has us on their schedule and will be here tomorrow morning! Plan to arrive with your families to the Frey Ct area on Fairwood tomorrow morning around 9:00am. The trucks will arrive around 9:10/9:15 as long as they don't have a service call.

We are pulling together light snacks and refreshments to be shared at Shrevewood Elementary School at the end of the parade. Last year, the trucks stuck around and kids were able to tour the vehicles. It was a great way to connect with one another and with our local fire department/EMS workers who give so much to our community.

Feel free to reach out to me via text or email if you have any questions or are able to pitch in and help us last minute.

We really hope you can join us!
Elise Ruckert (845-800-5883) & Lindsey Baker

I am so sorry you did not get the email I had to send on the 2nd ( maybe because I didn't know to send to Piplar, I just sent it to the WPCA listserv?)  We had to cancel this year because the FD never confirmed, even though I left many messages with the local station starting on June 9th (whoever answered the phones), even speaking on 28 with the lieutenant, who will be on duty this morning! It was really disappointing.

Sorry that you're only getting the news just now, I got called into work myself on the second I worked overnight, when I got back to the house yesterday at one in the afternoon, so I fell asleep on the couch him and we just woke up down here :-(( I will say that no one seemed available to help for this year's parade - maybe lots of families are out of town for the holiday? Sorry again!

I just got A call from the lieutenant who had my cell phone number as his point of contact, for the day of the parade. He wanted to confirm the address, and apologized for not getting back to me when I called and spoke with him, saying the day got away from him.

The important thing is that they will be there, so I hope that everyone has an amazing time! Thank you for all the volunteers who will now be pitching in, I worked an overnight shift on the second and totally missed the email for today :-( Missed dinner and fell asleep on the couch, eek - and happy Fourth of July!!

Thank you to Lindsey and Elise for reviving the parade for this year, and pulling it off in a moments notice! It sounds like it was a great event, the fire trucks were there despite all odds, and the kids enjoyed themselves. This literally would not have happened without the two of you. Thank you so much!! And thank you to Jen and Eileen for your initial efforts to get this off the ground. It really does take a village!

Going forward we will work on strengthening our communications, particularly regarding the outstanding needs of each event, in order to keep these special traditions alive. I truly believe each event, no matter how small, makes our community more vibrant, connected, and welcoming. Please ask all of your neighbors if they are on this listserv, because that is our primary means of communication.

Wishing all of you a safe and happy Independence Day!

Thanks Neal :-) I asked why they hadn't called back to confirm when we spoke the morning of 6/28 (said I was thrilled that they could be here today, but had written the neighborhood a few days ago to say that we'd need to cancel because I never heard back from the FD - not calls before him either, and my last call to the station was why I cancelled, the technician who answered said he wasn't C Shift, but didn't see us on the calendar😞).

But the lieutenant sincerely apologized and I thanked him - said I appreciated it and know that things can get busy, PLUS it was not a requirement to come to our parade, so we really were thankful they could - so all is well that ends well!!!

Sad that I worked 11:15am to midnight on Saturday, then 7pm Sunday until noon yesterday, because I just woke up on the couch ~7:30, will miss the parade and missed my mom and nieces' visit entirely, they leave at 10:30am. (The blessing and sometimes curse of working for USGOV - but proud to serve, 27 years and counting!...) If folks can send me pictures, happy to turn it into a photo montage like I did last year for the neighborhiod - so that will include you, PHCA!

Have a happy 4th of July!
- Jen Williams

Hakeema, I could not say it better myself👏 Thanks again to Lindsey and Elise again for stepping in - for John for  making sure they had our other volunteer Kenneth's contact info (while I was at work/not seeing email), and Eileen's awesome contributions last year and (until we thought it was over) this year. I truly appreciate all of you coming together, and I'm glad it happened after all! It's my favorite neighborhood tradition, like I said :-)

We watched "Hamilton" last night - not as awesome as you all making a group happen to greet the FD as it led our celebration - but Happy Independence Day everyone!!!

(PS: my poplar heights emails are getting kicked back, so cc'ing a few people who might help us get the message to them out, too...)
