We started the Podcast Peer Awards last fall, and after an initial burst of
enthusiasm, interest petered out. Two weeks ago I set out some e-mails and
posted on Podcast Alley and Podcast Pickle, and the results have been great.
We've had 35 new members sign up in the past week, and more are coming on
board each day. We've got over a hundred podcasters on board already, and
would like to double, then triple that number.

The idea is a simple one: An award by podcasters, for podcasters. The only
other active award I'm aware of is The Podcast Awards, which uses a
"People's Choice" approach. This approach gives a huge advantage to popular
shows at the expense of less popular ones. In addition, they use non-public
judging criteria to select the nominees. People can vote daily for the same
show, meaning someone with a dozen friends (with too much time on their
hands) can game the system.

The PPA works very differently. Only podcasters will be voting, and the
only criteria for nomination, finalists, and the final winner, will be the
number of votes received. Everyone gets one vote. It's simple, straight
forward, and very difficult to game the system. In addition, because it's a
system that includes your peers, the award should have more credibility and
value. Which is more valuable to an actor - an Oscar, or a People's Choice
award?

Please don't think I'm disparaging The Podcast Awards - I think they're a
great idea and anything that promotes podcasting to the general public
should be applauded. But the PPA could be, should be, a better, more
prestigious award.

Members of the PPA don't just vote for award winners, they vote on just
about everything. At the moment we're voting on categories. Most of those
votes will close the first week of June, so there's not much time left to
make your voice heard on this one. We're also picking a name for the award.
Should it be The Leo, The Curry, The Cerf, the John Peel Award, or something
else? This is an important decision, one we have to make pretty soon and
are not going to be able to change once it's made, so we need a lot of input
and ideas.

Nominations will start as soon as our list of categories are solidified.

Membership is, of course, free, and the qualifications are pretty simple -
you have to have done at least six shows and have been podcasting for at
least three months.

It's turning into a good party, and with everyone's help, we can make this
the coolest, most important and most prestigious award in podcasting. You
can be part of it. Just go to podcastpeers.org and sign up.

See you there!

Regards,

Dave Hitt

Suggested Categories:
Best Review Podcast (Concert Blast would be an excellent choice!)
Best Podbook Podcast
Best Documentory Podcast
Best Video Podcast (this could be broken down into categories)

Please don't name the award after a person...
Simply call it the Podcast Peer.

Thanks,
Mike Arnold

One of the categories we're voting on is "Best Review." And while we're not
concentrating on video podcasts yet, we probably will for the second round.
(The awards will be given twice a year, but each category will only be given
once a year.)

Why not stop by, join up, and post your suggestions?

Dave,
I am already registered to the forum. When I try to reply to a topic, I
get a white screen.

Is it me or something wrong with the site?

I wanted to suggest 3 review categories... Movies, Books, and Music.

I also wanted to suggest a Category for Celebrity Interviews.

My last suggestion is to allow only 1 award per podcast each time.

Thanks for the replies!
