Although he's only recently stepped down as the CEO of SCEI, Kutaragi
has already got ideas for the future of the PlayStation. Speaking to
EEtimes (as reported by CVG), Kutaragi said "As a matter of course, I
have the vision of PlayStation 4, 5 and 6, which will merge into the
network." He also said that he had turned over to his team his plans
for getting the cost of the PS3 down. I guess Nintendo probably won't
be employing him any time soon then.

As reported earlier, there's a good chance that now that broadband
networks are getting fast enough to consider full game downloads, the
PS4 and its successors will rely completely on digital downloading for
the content. It would seem to correlate with what Kutaragi has said
about merging the later models into the network. It would also give
Sony a means to combat piracy and wipe out the second-hand games
market, which they don't directly benefit from. If the console was
constantly wired into the network, then getting games on your console
without Sony's blessing would be tough.
