Hi Cerwin,

From my understanding the Maple Leaf Tar Spot is difficult to erradicate.  It won't harm the tree, it just makes it a little unsightly.  The tar spots are caused by a fungus and the spots appear late in the season.  It is advisable to rake the fallen leaves and remove them from the garden.
