Working Title: Administrative Assistant
Department: 35295-Med-McGowan Inst Regenerative Med
Position #: 0130355
Job Summary:

This position serves as a technical and administrative assistant (AA) to the editorial leadership team of the peer-reviewed scientific journal Acta Biomaterialia, including the editor-in-chief, Dr. William Wagner.

In this capacity, the incumbent is required to interface with preeminent international scientists who serve as editors, authors, reviewers and prospective reviewers. While the incumbent is not expected to be an expert in biomaterials, he/she needs to be capable of carrying on informed conversations about biomaterials technologies. In addition, the incumbent needs to understand the hierarchy of scientific publishing, such as the role of the editor, the reviewers, etc; needs to appreciate and respond accordingly to the conflicting issues arising from the fact that most reviewers are also potential authors. These researchers are very busy and preeminent in their field and are doing the journal a “favor” by reviewing a manuscript, BUT there are deadlines to meet publication schedules.

Serving as the predominant point of contact for an editor, the incumbent needs to tactfully utilize his/her technical skills, as well as diplomatic and interpersonal skills, to meet the operational and time-driven requirements of the journal with a mutual goal of high quality.

Based on the level and complexity of interactions with the external “customer base”, the incumbent must have a BS in science or engineering. The diversity of technical interests to be covered by the journal ranges from biomedicine to materials development; the incumbent needs to have a solid science/engineering background so that diverse topics submitted to the journal can be generally assessed to the extent that prospective reviewers can be identified and issues arising from reviews can be directed to the proper specialists for assessment and adjudication.

In addition to the technical understanding of the general subject material, the incumbent must be skilled at developing general correspondence that contains technical terminology.
